Gracious Saviour, shed thy grace,
And let me feel the soft'ning shower; Love me freely, seal my peace,
And bid me weep no more.
1 FONDLY my foolish heart essays T'augment the source of perfect bliss,Love's all-sufficient sea to raise,
With drops of creature-happiness! 2 O Love! thy sov'reign aid impart, And guard the gift thyself hast given, My portion, Thou my treasure art, My life, my happiness, my heaven! 3 Would aught on earth my wishes share; Tho' dear as life the idol be,
Lord, from my breast the idol tear, And let me find my All in Thee! 4 Then, what I've fondly counted mine, To thee, my Lord, I shall restore; Gladly to thee my all resign, Possessing thee-I want no more!
i My God, permit me not to be A stranger to myself and thee; Amidst a thousand thoughts I roye Forgetful of my highest love.
2 Why should my passions mix with earth, And thus debase my heav'nly birth; Why should I cleave to things below, And let my God, my Saviour go? 3 Call me away from flesh and sense, One sov'reign word can draw me thence; I would obey the voice divine,
And all inferior joys resign.
4 Be earth with all her scenes withdrawn, Let noise and vanity be gone;
In secret silence of the mind My God, and there my heav'n I find!
I LOVE DIVINE, how sweet thou art! When shall I find my longing heart All taken up by thee?
I thirst, I sigh, I faint to prove The greatness of redeeming love, The love of Christ to me!
2 Stronger his love than death and hell; Its riches are unsearchable:
The first-born sons of light Desire in vain its depths to see; They cannot reach the mystery,-
The length, and breadth, and height!
3 God only knows the love of God: O that it now were shed abroad In this poor stony heart!
For love I sigh, for love I pine: This only portion, Lord, be mine! Be mine this better part!
4 O that I could for ever sit, Like Mary, at Immanuel's feet! Be this my happy choice : My only care, delight, and bliss, My joy, my heav'n on earth be this,- To hear his lovely voice!
1 LORD, that I may learn of thee, Give me true simplicity: Wean my soul, and keep it low, Willing thee alone to know.
2 Let me cast my reeds aside- All that feeds my knowing pride: Not to man, but God, submit, Lay my reas'nings at thy feet.
3 Of my boasted wisdom spoil'd, Docile, helpless as a child; Only seeing in thy light, Only walking in thy might.
4 Thus infuse the teaching grace, Spirit of truth and righteousness; Knowledge, love divine impart, Life eternal to my heart!
1 JESUS, in whom the weary find Their late, but permanent repose; Physician of the sin-sick mind,
Relieve my wants, assuage my woes; And let my soul on thee be cast, Till sin's fierce tyranny be past.
2 Loos'd from my God, and far remov'd, Long have I wander'd to and fro;* O'er earth in endless circles rov'd, Nor found whereon to rest below; Back to my God at last I fly! For, oh, the waters still are high!
3 Selfish pursuits, and nature's maze,
The things of earth, for thee I leave; Put forth thy hand, thy hand of grace, Into the Ark of love receive; Take this poor flutt'ring soul to rest, And lodge it, Saviour, in thy breast! 4 Fill with thy own mysterious peace!
'Stablish and keep my settled heart: In thee may all my wand'rings cease, From thee may I no more depart: Thy utmost goodness call'd to prove, Lov'd with an everlasting love!
* In allusion to Noah's dove-Gen. viii. 8, 9.
1 JESUS, let my spirit feel Thou art God unchangeable! Jah, Jehovah, great I AM, Speak into my soul thy Name! 2 Plant, and root, and fix in me All the mind that was in thee; Settled peace I then shall find; Jesu's is a quiet mind.
3 Anger, then, I should not feel, Always even, always still; Meekly on my God reclin'd; Jesu's is a gentle mind.
4 I should suffer, and fulfil All my Father's gracious will; Be in all alike resign'd; Jesu's is a patient mind.
5 Were it deeply rooted here, Perfect love would cast out fear; Fear doth servile spirits bind; Jesu's is a noble mind.
6 I should triumph evermore, Gratefully my God adore; God so good, so true, so kind; Jesu's is a thankful mind.
1 JESUS, the Saviour still thou art, And all thy promises are sure;
