TO THE

RIGHT HONOURABLE

LORD ERSKIN E,

LATE

LORD HIGH CHANCELLOR

ОР

GREAT BRITAIN.

MY LORD,

IN grateful return for the personal attentions with which you have honoured me, I feel ambitious of placing at the head of these pages, a name long consecrated to the sacred cause of CIVIL and of RELIGIOUS LIBERTY. Indeed the flattering manner after which you have been pleased to express yourself, concerning this Volume, assures me of its useful nature and pacific tendency. Its uniform purport hath been, "to demolish the insidious wall of partition, to

cut off the occasion of theological lostility, and invite Christians in general to associate for the more extensive propagation of their common faith. While there exist so many opposite opinions, the several denominations will often act separately; but surely to a heart capable of admiring the generous spirit of the Gospel, it must be far more gratifying to enter into the scenes in which ALL can conscientiously act together, and to quit the dark confined alleys of a party, for the open, healthful, and cheerful plains of GENUINE CATHOLICISM." Such being the object of THE SKETCH, the Author may be allowed to feel an honest exultation in the almost unparalleled extent of its circulation-rejoicing as he does in the approbation of the enlightened and liberal of every denomination in the Christian world.*

* With respect to the above extract, see an anonymous Pamphlet, entitled-The Excellence of the Holy

A knowledge of the revealed will of heaven, my Lord, and an unrestrained freedom to carry individual conviction into practice, by yielding credence to articles of faith, and by adopting modes of worship, which accord with the dictates of conscience, are two prime blessings vouchsafed to the human race. Of their supreme value your enlightened mind is apprised. To their diffusion your efforts have been uniformly directed. The recollection of this conduct pursued by you, with ardour, amidst the duties of a most active life, and not forgotten by you, even in the most elevated juridical station, which regal favour hath in its power to bestow, cannot fail to impart.

Scriptures an Argument for their more general Dispersion, at Home and Abroad. It is written in behalf of that extensively useful Institution, the British and Foreign Bible Society, and is attributed to one of its secretaries, the Rev. Joseph Hughes, of Battersea.
