O

A Confeffion.

Righteous Lord, who hateft iniquity, I thy finful creature caft my felf at thy feet, acknowledging that I moft juftly deferve to be utterly abhorred and forfaken by thee for I have drunk iniquity like water; gone on in a continued courfe of fin and rebellion against thee, daily committingthofe things thou forbiddeft, and leaving undone thofe things thou commandeft: Mine heart, which fhould be an habitation for thy Spirit, is become a cage of unclean birds, of foul and difordered affections; and out of this abundance of the heart my mouth fpeaketh, my hands act: So that in thought, word, and deed, I continually tranfgrefs against thee. [ Here mention the greatest of thy fins] Nay, OLord, I have defpifed that goodness of thine which should lead me to repentance, hardning my heart against all thofe means thou haft ufed for my amendment. And now, Lord, what can I expect from thee, but judgment and fiery indignation; that is, indeed, the due reward of my Dd 4

fins? But, O Lord, there is mercy with thee, that thou mayat be feared. O fit me for that mercy, by giving me a deep and hearty repentance; and then, according to thy goodness, let thine anger and thy wrath be turned away from me: Look upon me in thy Son, my bleffed Saviour, and for the merit of his fufferings pardon all my fins: And, Lord, I befeech thee, by the power of thy grace fo to renew and purify my heart, that I may be come a new creature, utterly forfaking every evil way, and living in conftant, fincere, univerfal obedience to thee all the reft of my days; that, behaving my felf as a good and faithful fervant, I may, by thy mercy, at the laft be received into the joy of my Lord. Grant this, for Jefus Chrift his fake.

A Prayer for Grace.

Moft gracious God, from whom every good and perfect gift cometh, I, wretched creature, that am not able of my felf fo much as to think a good thought, befeech thee to work in me both to will and do according to thy good pleafure: Enlighten my mind, that I may know thee, and let me not be barren or unfruitful in that knowledge: Lord, work in my heart a true faith, a purifying hope, and an unfeigned love towards thee: Give me a full truft on thee, zeal for thee, reverence of all things that relate to

thee :

thee: Make me fearful to offend thee, thankful for thy mercies, humble under thy corrections, devout in thy fervice, forrowful for my fius; and grant, that in all things I may behave my self fo, as befits a creature to his Creator, a fervant to his Lord. Enable me likewife to perform that duty I owe to my felf: Give me that meeknefs, humility, and contentedness, whereby I may always poffefs my foul in patience and thankfulness. Make me diligent in all my duties, watchful against all temptations, perfectly pure and temperate, and fo moderate in my moft lawful enjoyments, that they may never become a fnare to me. Make me alfo, O Lord, to be fo affected towards my neighbour, that I never tranfgrefs that royal law of thine, of loving him as my felf. Grant me exactly to perform all parts of juftice, yielding to all whatsoever by any kind of right becomes their due; and give me fuch bowels of mercy and compaffion, that I may never fail to do all acts of charity to all men, whether friends or enemies, according to thy command and example. Finally, I beseech thee, O Lord, to fanctify me throughout, that my whole fpirit, and foul, and body may be preferved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift; to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghoft, be all honour and glory for ever. Amen.

Interceffion.

O

Interceffion.

Bleffed Lord, whofe mercy is over all thy works; I beseech thee to have mercy upon all men, and grant, that the precious ranfom, which was paid by thy Son for all, may be effectual to the faving of all. Give thy inlightning grace to thofe that are in darkness, and thy converting grace to thofe that are in fin: Look with thy tendereft compaffions upon the universal Church: O be favourable and gracious unto Sion, build thou the walls of Ferufalem Unite all thofe, that profefs thy name, to thee, by purity and holiness, and to each other by brotherly love. Have mercy on this defolate Church, and finful Nation; thou haft moved the land, and divided it, heal the fores thereof, for it shaketh : Make us so truly to repent of those fins which have provoked thy judgments, that thou also mayft turn, and repent, and leave a bleffing behind thee. Blefs thofe whom thou haft appointed our gover nours, whether in Church or State: So rule their hearts, and strengthen their hands, that they may neither want will nor power to punish wickedness and vice, and to maintain God's true religion and virtue. Have pity, O Lord, on all that are in affliction; be a Father to the fatherlefs, and plead the cause of the widow: Comfort the feeble-minded, fupport the weak, heal the fick, relieve the needy, defend the

oppreffed, and administer to every one according to their feveral neceffities. Let thy bleffings reft upon all that are near and dear to me, and grant them whatsoever thou feeft neceffary, either to their bodies or their fouls: [ Here name thy nearest relations] Reward all thofe that have done me good, and pardon all thofe that have done or wifhed me evil: and work in them and me all that good which may make us acceptable in thy fight, through Jefus Christ.

For Prefervation.

Merciful God, by whose bounty alone it is that I have this day added to my lite, I befeech thee fo to guide me in it by thy grace, that I may do nothing which may dif honour thee, or wound my own foul, but that I may diligently apply my felf to do all fuch good works, as thou haft prepared for me to walk in: And, Lord, I beseech thee, give thy Angels charge over me, to keep me in all my ways, that no evil happen unto me, nor any plague come nigh my dwelling, but that I and mine may be fafe under thy gracious protection, through Jefus Christ.

O

Lord, pardon the wandrings and coldness of these petitions, and deal with me not according either to my prayers or deferts, but according to my needs, and thine own rich mercies in Jefus Chrift, in whose bleffed name
