"Father of mercies, God of love, "May he these stubborn lusts subdue, "He is the source of every grace, And all my works in him be wrought. "O let thy Holy Spirit come, And make my heart his constant home; And lead me in a perfect way!" A PRAYER FOR THE UNITY OF THE CHURCH. 1. O Almighty God, who hast built thy Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head corner-stone; .... 1. He called unto him his disciples, and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles, . . . Simon called Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. Luke, vi. 13. 15, 16. And his brethren, Simon and Judas. Mat. xiii. 55. These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not and as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat. x. 5. 7. Ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto a holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. Ep. ii. 19-22. Upon this rock I will build my Church. Mat. xvi. 18. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Rev. xxi. 14. Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone, a sure foundation. Is. xxviii. 16. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner; this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Mat. xxi. 42.-See also Ps. cxviii. 22, 23.; 1 Pet. ii. 6. 2. Grant us 2. These things I command you, that ye so to be join- love one another. John, xv. 7. Neither ed together pray I for these alone, but for them also in unity of which shall believe on me through their spirit by their word; that they all may be one; as thou, doctrine, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us. John, xvii. 20, 21. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. Ep. iv. 3-6. 13. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 1 Cor. i. 10. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded. Whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. Ph. iii. 15, 16. Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other Gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Gal. i. 8. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed. 2 John, 10. Only let your conversation be as it becometh the Gospel of Christ that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the Gospel. Ph. i. 27. Let us follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. Rom. xiv. 19. 3. that we may be made an holy temple accepta ble unto thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 3. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you ? if any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Cor. iii. 16, 17. What agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 2 Cor. vi. 16. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 1 Pet. ii. 5. In whom all the building fitly framed_together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord. Ep. ii. 21. Now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Acts, xx. 32. To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. Ep. i. 6. Collect for St. Simon and St. Jude. |
