-The Topeka Capital of August 28, 1886, says: "The State Historical Society has received into its manuscript collections the principal part of the original manuscript copy of the report of the Kansas Congres- sional Committee of 1856. It was sent by Hon. John Sherman to the State Library, and has been deposited by State Librarian Dennis with the State Historical Society. The manuscript embraces 205 pages, and has the following memorandum indorsed upon it:
"This is part of the original draft of the Kansas Congressional Report. Some of the original manuscript was put in the hands of the printer; some is in the handwriting of Mr. Lord and another clerk; this was dictated by me, June 30, 1856.
"The Committee was appointed by Speaker N. P. Banks, under a res- olution of the House of Representatives, adopted March 19, 1856, com- posed of William A. Howard of Michigan, John Sherman of Ohio, and Mordecai Oliver of Missouri. The Committee was directed to inquire into and collect evidence in regard to the troubles generally, and par- ticularly in regard to any fraud or force attempted or practiced in ref- erence to any of the elections which had taken place in the Territory. The published report, signed by Messrs. Howard and Sherman, embraces sixty-seven pages. The minority report, signed by Mr. Oliver, makes forty-two pages. These reports, with the minutes of the Committee, make up 132 pages. The testimony makes 1,188 pages. Altogether the published report embraces 1,323 pages. It is a volume of wonder- ful historical value. The Committee came to Kansas in April, 1856, and took testimony at Lawrence, Tecumseh, Leavenworth, and elsewhere, and made their report to the House of Representatives. Twenty thou-
sand copies of the report were published. The Historical Society has several pictures of William A. Howard, of Michigan, who was chairman of this Committee."
Thus Quivira was forsaken,
And the world forgot the place, Until centuries apace
Came the blue-eyed Saxon race, And it bade the desert waken.
And it bade the climate vary; And awaiting no reply
From the elements on high,
It with ploughs besieged the sky — Vexed the heavens with the prairie.
Then the vitreous sky relented,
And the unacquainted rain Fell upon the thirsty plain,
Whence had gone the knights of Spain, Disappointed, discontented.
Sturdy are the Saxon faces,
As they move along in line; Bright the rolling cutters shine, Charging up the State's incline, As an army storms a glacis.
Into loam the sand is melted,
And the blue-grass takes the loam, Round about the prairie home; And the locomotives roam Over landscapes iron belted. Cities grow where stunted birches Hugged the shallow water-line, And the deepening rivers twine Past the factory and mine, Orchard-slopes and schools and churches.
Deeper grows the soil and truer,
More and more the prairie teems With a fruitage as of dreams; Clearer, deeper, flow the streams, Blander grows the sky, and bluer. We have made the State of Kansas, And to-day she stands complete- First in freedom, first in wheat; And her future years will meet Ripened hopes and richer stanzas.
