HYMNS.

ADVENT.

1.

C. M.

HARK! the glad sound! the Saviour comes,

The Saviour promised long!

Let every heart prepare a throne,

And every voice a song.

He comes, the prisoners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes, the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And with the riches of His grace
To bless the humble poor.

Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And heaven's eternal arches ring
With Thy beloved Name.

2.

WHEN Christ came down on earth of old,
He took our nature poor and low;
He wore no form of angel mould,

But shared our weakness and our woe.

L.M.

But when He cometh back once more,
Then shall be set the great white throne;
And earth and heaven shall flee before
The face of Him that sits thereon.

O Son of God! in glory crown'd,
The Judge ordain'd of quick and dead;
O Son of Man! so pitying found
For all the tears Thy people shed;

Be with us in that awful hour,

And by Thy crown, and by Thy grave,

By all Thy love and all Thy power,
In that great Day of Judgment save.

3.

Amen.

L.M.

THAT day of wrath, that dreadful day,
When heaven and earth shall pass away,
What power shall be the sinner's stay?
How shall he meet that dreadful day?
When, shrivelling like a parched scroll,
The flaming heavens together roll;
When louder yet, and yet more dread,
Swells the high trump that wakes the dead;

Oh! on that day, that wrathful day,
When man to judgment wakes from clay,
Be Thou, O Christ, the sinner's stay,
Though heaven and earth shall pass away.

Amen.

4.

Lo! He comes! with clouds descending,
Once for favour'd sinners slain;
Thousand thousand saints attending
Swell the triumph of His train:
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Amen.

Every eye shall now behold Him,
Robed in dreadful majesty;

Those who set at nought and sold Him,
Pierced, and nail'd Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

Every island, sea, and mountain,
Heaven and earth shall flee away;
All who hate Him must, confounded,
Hear the trump proclaim the day;
Come to judgment!

Come to judgment! come away.

Now redemption, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear!
All His saints, by man rejected,
Now shall meet Him in the air!
Hallelujah!

See the day of God appear!

Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,

High on Thine eternal Throne!
Saviour! take the power and glory:
Claim the kingdom for Thine own!
Oh, come quickly!
Hallelujah! Come, Lord, come!

P.M.

Amen.
