PREFACE. I have written these brief Essays chiefly, but not exclusively, for the young. Those who are pursuing their studies will, I hope, find some little stimulus, and encouragement, and direction, in the following pages; whilst those whose right to the name of student may be justly challenged, may find in them motives to resume, so far as they have opportunity, the honorable work in which, at school or college, they were engaged. I have not written for any particular class—the "Republic of Letters" is one not only in name, but in reality; nor have I written for any particular religious denomination. I am not aware that there is a sentence in the book tinged with any sectarian colouring whatever. I have, however, endeavoured to show that all education should be richly leavened with the principles of our holy religion; but I suppose that in this I am at one with Christians of every land and every church.
