Now that this pleasant form of amusement is so universally adopted, we would willingly bend the freaks of fancy into some path of usefulness. We have never advocated the harsh discipline of "all work and no play;" but as the brilliant tints of the rainbow light up the dark clouds of nature, so we would desire that the murky shades of study and labour should be gilded with harmless recreation.

With this view we have ventured to introduce into our "Double Acrostics" many allusions to history, geography, or general literature, as a means of testing the memory and judgment of our young readers; thus, while endeavouring to make our book instructive, offering to their ingenuity a pastime which fashion sanctions and the most severe discipline cannot condemn.
