CHRISTIAN, seek not yet repose,
Cast thy dreams of ease away;
Thou art in the midst of foes:
Watch and pray.

2 Gird Thy heavenly armor on,
Wear it ever night and day;
Near thee lurks the evil one;
Watch and pray.

7,7,7,3.

3 Hear the victors who o'ercame;
Still they watch each warrior's way;
All with one deep voice exclaim,
Watch and pray.

4 Hear, above all these, thy Lord,
Him thou lovest to obey;
Hide within thy heart His word,
Watch and pray.

5 Watch, as if on that alone
Hung the issue of the day;
Pray that help may be sent down;
Watch and pray.

CHRISTIAN, dost thou see them

On the holy ground,

How the hosts of darkness

Compass thee around?

Christian, up and smite them,

Counting gain but loss;

Smite them, Christ is with thee,
Soldier of the cross.

2 Christian, dost thou feel them,
How they work within,
Striving, tempting, luring,
Goading into sin?
Christian, never tremble;
Never be downcast;
Gird thee for the battle,
Watch and pray and fast.

3 Christian, dost thou hear them,
How they speak thee fair?
Always fast and vigil?
Always watch and prayer?"
Christian, answer boldly:

While I breathe I pray :"
Peace shall follow battle,
Night shall end in day.

4 "Well I know thy trouble,
O My servant true;
Thou art very weary,
I was weary too;

But that toil shall make thee

Some day all Mine own,

And the end of sorrow

Shall be near My_throne."

St. Andrew of Crete. Tr. J. M. Neale.

LET our choir new anthems raise,
Wake the song of gladness;

God himself to joy and praise
Turns the martyrs' sadness:

Bright the day that won their crown,
Open'd heav'n's bright portal,

As they laid the mortal down
To put on th' immortal.

2 Never flinched they from the flame,
From the torture, never;
Vain the foeman's sharpest aim,
Satan's best endeavor;

For by faith they saw the land
Decked in all its glory,

Where triumphant now they stand
With the victor's story.

3 Faith they had that knew not shame,
Love that could not languish ;
And eternal hope o'ercame
Momentary anguish.

He who trod the self-same road
Death and hell defeated;

Wherefore these their passions showed
Calvary repeated.

4 Up and follow, Christian men!
Press through toil and sorrow;
Spurn the night of fear, and then,
Oh, the glorious morrow!
Who will venture on the strife?
Blest who first begin it!

Who will grasp the land of life?
Warriors, up and win it!

Joseph, the Hymnographer. Tr. J. M. Neale.

WHEN I can read my title clear

To mansions in the skies,

I bid farewell to ev'ry fear,
And wipe my weeping eyes.

2 Should earth against my soul engage,
And hellish darts be hurled,

Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowning world.

3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,
And storms of sorrow fall;
May I but safely reach my home,
My God, my heaven, my all :

4 There shall I bathe my weary soul
In seas of heavenly rest,
And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.

I. Watts.

7s.

CAST thy burden on the Lord,
Only lean upon His word;

Thou shalt soon have cause to bless
His eternal faithfulness.

2 Ever in the raging storm

Thou shalt see His cheering form,
Hear His pledge of coming aid:
"It is I, be not afraid."

3 Cast thy burden at His feet;
Linger at His mercy-seat:
He will lead thee by the hand
Gently to the better land.

Anon.

11s.

THOUGH faint, yet pursuing, we go on our

way;

The Lord is our leader, His Word is our

stay;

Though suff'ring, and sorrow, and trial be

near,

The Lord is our refuge, and whom can we

fear?

2 He raiseth the fallen, He cheereth the faint; The weak and oppressed, He will hear their

complaint;

The way may be weary, and thorny the road,

But how can we falter? Our help is in God.

3 And to His green pastures our footsteps He leads;

His flock in the desert, how kindly He

feeds!

The lambs in His bosom He tenderly bears, And brings back the wanderers safe from the snares.

4 Though clouds may surround us, our God is our light;

Though storms rage around us, our God is our might;

So faint, yet pursuing, still onward we

come;

The Lord is our leader, and heaven is our

home!

J. N. Darby.

11s.

THE Lord is my Shepherd; no want shall I know;

I feed in green pastures, safe-folded I

rest;

He leadeth my soul where the still waters

flow,

Restores me when wandering, redeems when oppressed.

2 Through the valley and shadow of death though I stray,

Since Thou art my guardian, no evil I fear;
