5 My fad complaints in praises end,
And tears of gratitude defcend;
I throw my fackloth on the ground,
And ease and gladness gird me round,
6 My tongue, the glory of my frame,

Thy power and goodness fhall proclaim;
Thy praise fhall found thro' earth and heaven.
For fickness heal'd and fins forgiven.

PSALM XXXI.

Common Metre.

*

Relief from Diftrefs.

OME, O ye faints, your voices raise
To God in grateful songs;

Co

And let the memory of his grace
Inspire your hearts and tongues.

2 His frown what mortal can sustain !
But foon his anger dies;
His life-reftoring fmile again

Returns, and forrow flies.

3 Her deepest gloom, when forrow spreads,
And light and hope depart,

His face celeftial morning sheds,
And joy revives the heart.

4 To thee, my God, opprefs'd with grief,
I breath'd my humble cry;
Thy mercy brought divine relief,
And wip'd my weeping eye.

5 Thy mercy chas'd the fhades of death,
And snatch'd me from the grave;
O may thy praise employ that breath
Which mercy deigns to fave.

PSALM XXXI. Long Metre.

Confidence in God.

or b

ORD, in thy great, thy glorious name,
LORD,
I place my hope, my only truft ;
Save me from forrow, guilt and fhame,
Thou ever gracious, ever just.

2 Thou art my Rock, thy name alone
The fortrefs where my hopes retreat ;
O make thy power and mercy known,
To fafety guide my wandering feet.
3 To thy kind hand, all gracious Lord,
My foul I cheerfully refign;

My faviour God, I trust thy word,
For truth, immortal truth, is thine.

4 I hate their works, I hate their ways,
Who follow vanity and lies;

But to the Lord my hopes I raise,
And truft his power who built the skies.
5 What perfect blifs, O bounteous Lord,
Immensely great, divinely free,

Haft thou referv'd for their reward,
Who fear thy name, and truft in thee!
6 Bleft be the Lord, forever bleft,
Whofe mercy bids my fear remove;
The facred walls which guard my rest
Are his almighty power and love.
7 Ye humble fouls, who feek his face,
Let facred courage fill your heart!
Hope in the Lord and truft his grace,
And he will heavenly strength impart.

PSALM XXXII. Long Metre. b

The Marks of true Repentance.

E's bleft, whofe fins have pardon gain'd,

H'No more in judgment to appear;
Whofe guilt remiffion has obtain❜d,
And whofe repentance is fincere.
2 From guile his heart and lips are free,
His humble joy, his holy fear
With deep repentance well agree,
And join to prove his faith fincere.
3 Whilft I kept filence and conceal'd
My load of guilt within my heart,
What torment did my confcience feel!
What agony of inward smart.

4 Heavy on me thy hand remain'd,
By day and night alike diftrefs'd;
Till quite of vital moisture drain'd,
Like land with fummer drought opprefs'd.
S No fooner I my wound difclos'd,
The guilt that tortur'd me within,
But thy forgiveness interpos'd,
And mercy's healing balm pour'd in.
6 For this difplay of fovereign grace,
In my diftrefs fo freely given,

Each humble foul will seek thy face,
And find his way to peace and heaven.
TATE and WATTS, united and varied.

PSALM XXXII.

Short Metre. b

Confeffion and Pardon.

BLESSED fouls are they,

Whofe fins are cover d'o'er,

Divinely bleft, to whom the Lord,
Imputes their guilt no more!

2 They mourn their follies past,
And keep their hearts with care;
Their lips and lives, without deceit,
Shall prove their faith fincere.

3 When I conceal'd my guilt,
I felt the feftering wound;
But I confefs'd my fin to thee,
And ready pardon found.

4 Let finners learn to pray,

Let faints keep near the throne; Our help, in time of deep distress, Is found in God alone.

PSALM XXXIII. Common Metre.
The works of Creation and Providence.

REJOICE, ye righteous, in the Lord,

This work belongs to you;
Sing of his name, his ways, his word,
How holy, juft and true!

2 His mercy and his righteousness
Let heaven and earth proclaim;
His works of nature and of grace
Reveal his wondrous name.
3 His wifdom and almighty word
The heavenly orbits fpread;
And by the Spirit of the Lord
Their fhining hofts were made.
4 He bade the liquid waters flow
To their appointed deep;
The flowing feas their limits know,
And their own ftation keep.

5 Ye tenants of the fpacious earth,
With fear before him ftand :

He spoke, and nature took its birth,
And refts on his command.

6 He scorns the angry nations' rage,
And breaks their vain designs ;
His counsel stands thro' every age,
And in full glory fhines.

PSALM XXXIII. Six Line L. M.
Creatures vain, and God all-fufficient.
APPY the nation, where the Lord

H Reveals the treasure of his word,

*

And builds his church, his earthly throne;
His eye the heathen world furveys,
He form'd their hearts, he knows their ways,
But God, their Maker, is unknown.

2 Let kings rely upon their hoft,
And of his strength. the warrior boast,
In vain they boast, in vain rely;
In vain they truft the brutal force,
Or fpeed, or courage of the horse
To guard his rider, or to fly.
3 The eye of thy compaffion, Lord,
Doth more fecure defence afford,

When death and danger threat'ning stand;
Thy watchful eye preferves the juft,
Who make thy name their fear and truft,
When wars or famine waste the land.

4 In fickness, or the bloody field,

Thou, our Physician, thou, our Shield,
Send us falvation from thy throne;
We wait to fee thy goodness fhine,
Let us rejoice in help divine,
For all our hope is God alone.
