HYMN CV. C. M.

Troubled, but making God a Refuge.

DEAR

[merged small][ocr errors]

EAR refuge of my weary soul. On thee, when sorrows rise, On thee, when waves of trouble roll, My fainting hope relies.

II.

To thee I tell each rising grief,

For thou alone canst heal,

Thy word can bring a sweet relief
For every pain I feel.

111.

But, O when gloomy doubts prevail,
I fear to call thee mine;
The springs of comfort seem to fail,
And all my hopes decline.

IV.

Yet, gracious GOD, where shall I flee?
Thou art my only trust;

And still my soul would cleave to thee,
Tho' prostrate in the dust.

v.

Hast thou not bid me seek thy face?

And shall I seek in vain?

And can the ear of sovereign grace
Be deaf when I complain?

VI.

No, still the ear of sovereign grace
Áttends the mourner's prayer;

O may I ever find access.
To breathe my sorrows there.

VII.

Thy mercy seat is open still,
Here let my soul retreat,
With humble hope attend thy will,
And wait beneath thy feet.

HYMN CVI. P. M

Cast down, yet hoping in God. !

I.

MY soul, what means this sadness?
Wherefore art thou thus cast down?

Let thy griefs be turn'd to gladness,
Bid thy restless fears be gone:

Look to JESUS,

And rejoice in his dear name.

II.

What tho' Satan's strong temptations
Vex and teize thee, day by day,
And thy sinful inclinations

Often fill thee with dismay:
Thou shall conquer,

Thro' the Lamb's redeeming blood.

III.

Tho' ten thousand ills beset thee

From without and from within;

JESUS saith, he'll ne'er forget thee,
But will save from hell and sin:
He is faithful,

To perform his gracious word.

IV.

Tho' distresses now attend thee,

;

And thou tread'st the thorny road His right hand shall still defend thee, Soon he'll bring thee home to GoD: Therefore praise him,

Praise the great Redeemer's name.

O that I could now adore him,
Like the heavenly host above,
Who for ever bow before him,
And unceasing sing his love!
Happy songsters !

When shall I your chorus join?

Now

HYMN CVII. L. M.

Rising to God.

I.

OW let our souls, on wings sublime. Rise from the vanities of time; Draw back the parting veil, and see The glories of eternity.

II.

Born by a new celestial birth,

Why should we grovel here on earth?

Why grasp at transitory toys,
So near to heaven's eternal joys?

III.

Shall aught beguile us on the road,
When we are walking back to GOD?
For strangers into life we come,
And dying is but going home.

IV.

Welcome, sweet hour of full discharge
That sets our longing souls at large;
Unbinds our chains, breaks up our cell,
And gives us with our God to dwell.

V.

To dwell with GoD, to feel his love
Is the full heaven enjoy'd above;
And the sweet expectation now
Is the young dawn of heaven below.

HYMN CIX. C. M.

Remembering all the way the Lord has led

us.

I.

far my GOD hath led me on,

THUS fara de his truth and mercy known;

My hopes and fears alternate rise,
And comforts mingle with my sighs.

II.

Thro' this wide wilderness I roam,
Far distant from my blissful home;
LORD, let thy presence be my stay,
And guard me in this dangerous way.

[ocr errors]

Temptations every where annoy,
And sins and snares my peace destroy;
My earthly joys are from me torn,
And of an absent GOD I mourn.

[ocr errors]

My soul, with various tempests toss'd,
Her hopes o'erturn'd, her projects cross'd;
Sees
every day new straits attend,

And wonders where the scene will end.

V.

Is this, dear LORD, that thorny road,
Which leads us to the mount of God?
Are these the toils thy people know,
While in the wilderness below.

VI.

'Tis even so, thy faithful love
Doth all thy children's graces prove;
'Tis thus our pride and self must fall,
That JESUS may be all in all.
