PREFACE

In addition to its primary mission of preserving materials of historical significance relating to the military history of the United States, the US Army Military History Research Collection also has the mission of making these materials available for research by all scholars, both civilian and military. Fostering the use of the valuable research materials in the Research Collection, however, is somewhat difficult since no printed catalog of its holdings has yet been prepared. A series of special bibliographies,

each covering a specific field of Research Collection holdings, will be prepared as a service to potential users.

The subjects selected for this special series will vary greatly. Some wil1 be primarily of historical nature related to an event or events of the past. Others, however, will relate primarily to issues of current importance and interest. It must be emphasized, however, that bibliographies of this type are intended to provide historical references applying to the particular topic; they do NOT include a review of current media coverage of the subject. The criteria used in selecting these bibliographic subjects are relatively simple: the subject is of interest to not only members of the Defense Establishment, but also to the academic community; the subject is also of interest to the general public; and the holdings of the Military History Research Collection include sufficient materials of significant contentual importance to justify the publication of a special bibliography.

As was true with the first bibliography of the special series, "The US Army and Domestic Disturbances", the topic of this second listing is timely. Current interest in the problems of racial minorities in the United States has produced increased interest in the role of these groups within the Armed Forces. As John Slonaker so ably points out in his introduction, the racial problems of a society seep into garrison life. Consequently, this bibliography, "The US Army and the Negro", provides a useful listing of materials relating to the service of the Negro soldier in the Army. bibliography is not intended as a definitive listing of holdings of other institutions; it includes only those books and other materials to be found either in the US Army Military History Research Collection or the US Army War College Library at Carlisle Barracks.

The

This bibliography has been prepared by John Slonaker of the Historical Research and Reference Division of the Military History Research Collection. Prior to joining the staff of the Research Collection, Mr. Slonaker was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Military History, Department of the Army.
