Vascular factors - including cerebral abnormalities, cardiovascular pathophysiology, and genetic influences - are rapidly gaining importance in the cause and progression of Alzheimer's disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and other vascular dementias. This text, taken from a conference, addresses several important epidemiologic, pathologic, and clinical issues in establishing the role of vascular pathogensis of these debilitating disorders, including a review of collinergic and other molecular mechanisms, white matter lesioins, the roles of apolipoprotein E, and genetics. The presenters also offer new approaches to diagnostic, preventive and treatment strategies for the caregivers of a patient populations that is increasing with an aging population.
