7.

HE Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him. Nahum i. 7.

Jesus, Refuge of my soul,

Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high;
Hide me, O my Saviour, hide,
Till the storm of life be past;
Safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last!

8.

THE Lord knoweth them that are His.

2 Tim. ii. 19.

What matters it, though to our name

No page on earth be given?
If only, Lord, Thy blessed hand
Inscribe our name in Heaven?

9.

LORD, teach us to pray.

St. Luke xi. 1.

If pain afflict, or wrongs oppress,
If cares distract, or fears dismay,
If guilt deject, if sin distress,

The remedy's before thee-Pray.

IO.

MY Beloved is mine, and I am His.

Song of Solomon ii. 16.

The good I have is from His stores supplied;
The ill is only what He deems the best;
He for my Friend, I'm rich with nought beside;
And poor without Him, though of all possest:
Changes may come; I take, or I resign;
Content while I am His, while He is mine.

II.

AND being in an agony He prayed

more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. St. Luke xxii. 44.

Go to dark Gethsemane,

Ye that feel the tempter's power;

Your Redeemer's conflict see,

Watch with Him one bitter hour:

Turn not from His griefs away,

Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

12.

BE ye therefore perfect, even as your

Father which is in heaven is perfect.

St. Matt. v. 48.

So to perfection's sacred height
We nearer still may rise,
And all we think, and all we do,
Be pleasing in Thine eyes.

13.

AM the Bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst. St. John vi. 35

Bread of the world, in mercy broken,
Wine of the soul, in mercy shed,
By whom the words of life were spoken,
And in whose death our sins are dead;
Look on the heart by sorrow broken,
Look on the tears by sinners shed,
And be Thy feast to us the token

That by Thy grace our souls are fed.

14.

F any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, St. Matt. xvi. 24.

and follow Me.

The Son of God goes forth to war,

A kingly crown to gain;

His blood-red banner streams afar:
Who follows in His train?

Who best can drink his cup of woe,

Triumphant over pain;

Who patient bears his cross below,
He follows in His train.

15.

HAVING a desire to depart, and to

be with Christ; which is far better. Phil. i. 23.

Let me be with Thee where Thou art,

My Saviour, my eternal Rest!

Then only will this longing heart
Be fully and for ever blest.

16.

THERE shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall

there be any more pain: for the former

things are passed away.

Rev. xxi. 4.

For thee, O dear, dear country,

Mine eyes their vigils keep;

For very love, beholding

Thy happy name, they weep.
The mention of thy glory
Is balm to the distress'd;
Is medicine in sickness;

Is love, and life, and rest.

17.

HEY that sow in tears shall reap in
joy.
Ps. cxxvi. 5.

Brief life is here our portion,
Brief sorrow, short-lived care;
The life that knows no ending,
The tearless life is there.

18.

BEHOLD, O My people, I will open

your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves. Ezek. xxxvii. 12.

Thou art gone to the grave: but we will not deplore thee,

Though sorrows and darkness encompass the tomb; The Saviour hath pass'd through its portal before thee, And the lamp of His love is thy guide through the gloom.

19.

WATCH thou in all things, endure

afflictions.

2 Tim. iv. 5.

Hope, peace, and joy from trouble shall arise,
To bless thee and prepare thee for the skies.

20.

BELOVED, if God so loved us, we

ought also to love one another.

Love is ever flowing,
Flowing ever down;

1 John iv. II.

Love through all lands going

From the heavenly throne,

God's eternal city doth with gladness crown.
