BOUT twenty years ago, it was my duty to conduct divine service regularly ina Parish Church with as ugly an exterior as you could possibly imagine. Inside things were rather better, though the

pews were very uncomfortable. Stout ladies had considerable difficulty in getting in to them, and if their limbs were somewhat short they got no rest for the soles of their feet. But the great thing about the inside of a church is the congregation, and it was a very large, hearty, and I think I may add a distinguished one. Opposite the pulpit was a very large pew

princes of the Royal blood have worshipped with us. Down below at my left sat my dear old friend Thomas Tod Stoddart, skilful angler, apt poet, racy reciter, a humble-minded but Godinspired man. And above his seat in the gallery, in a large pew, there sat on chairs a father and two sons. The father was the member for the County-Sir George Douglas of Springwood Park-an able and delightful man who dearly loved the Border Country, and had its best interests at heart. His eldest son was a young military officer of the highest promise. On the outbreak of the Zulu War, his regiment-the 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers-was sent to the Cape, and there Lieutenant Scott-Douglas was placed in charge of the signalling department-a very responsible position.
