Jerusalem.] Is the Christian Church confined to one place? [Ans. No. Are there not many branches of it? [Ans. Yes.] Are there Ministers to every branch of the Christian Church? [Ans. A Member of the Holy Catholic Church.] What is meant by the Holy Catholic Church? [Ans. The whole Society of Christians, of which Jesus Christ is the head.]

Instruction.---There are other branches of the Christian Church established in different nations; but we have no farther concern with them than to pray for them; and there are Dissenters from the established Church in every nation; that is, persons who separate themselves from it, because they do not approve of its tenets, and assemble together in places which do not belong to the Church of England, where the Liturgy is not used, and where the ministry does not consist of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. The Dissenters from the Church of England, by an Act of Parliament; called an Act of Toleration, are allowed the free exercise of their own Religion amongst themselves; and the members of the Church should live in peace and harmony with the Dissenters, not quarrelling with them, or persecuting them for their difference of opinion; but at the same time they should always be upon their guard, not to be drawn away from the Church they properly belong to; therefore, if you should be tempted at any time, by the promise of hearing a fine Preacher, to leave the Church of England, you should call to mind that you are properly a member of that Church, which is certainly a true Church, and therefore you ought not to separate yourself from it, because it is forbidden in Scripture.

Questions.---How far should we concern ourselves with other churches? [Ans. We should pray for them.] What is

meant by a Dissenter? [Ans. One who separates from the Established Church.] Do the Dissenters use the Common Prayer? [Ans. No.] Have they the same kind of Ministry? [Ans. No.] Are they allowed the free exercise of their religion amongst themselves? [Ans. Yes.] Should the members of the Church of England quarrel with them, or persecute them, on account of their opinions? [Ans. No.] Should the members of the Established Church suffer themselves to be persuaded by Dissenters to forsake the Church, and join with them? [Ans. No.] Why should they keep true to their own Church? [Ans. Because they are members of it.] As it can be proved from Scripture that the Church of England is a true church, should you believe any one who tells you it is not so? [Ans. No.]

LECTURES

ON THE

CATECHISM OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

DIRECTIONS FOR THE TEACHER..

It will be advisable to repeat the foregoing Intro-dactory Lecture, till the Children can answer the Questions readily, without having the Explanation. read to them;

As the Catechism of the Church of England contains all the fundamental Doctrines of Christianity,it is of the utmost importance that Children should perfectly understand it. In order to this, they. should, in the first place, be taught to repeat the words of it distinctly, and to make the stops in the proper places. In the following Lectures the Questions and Answers of the Catechism itself are printed in a larger letter than the Explanation of it, and the stops are marked by ruled lines.

LECTURE I

On the Baptismal Vow.

Instruction.---As children are received into the Church by baptism in their infancy, and those who answer, for them are required to see that they are instructed in all that a Christianought to know and believe for his soul's health; and as all the Members of the Church should agree in the same doctrines; the Church of England has a Catechism for the instruction of children, which is required to be learned by every person before he be brought to be confirmed by the bishop. In this Catechism all the Doctrines of the Christian Religion are taught. You have learnt the words of the Catechism by heart, and it shall now be explained to you.

Question.-Who gave you this name?

Answer.-My godfathers and godmothers in my baptism, wherein I was made a member of Christ -the child of God-and an inheritor of the kingdom. of heaven.

Explanation.---Your name, John, Mary, &c. is your Christian name, so called because it was given you when you were made a Christian; that is, when you were baptized, or christened. Your Godfathers and godmothers are persons who answered for you, because you could not answer for yourself; ; you were at that time a little baby, and could neither speak nor understand. Being Baptised, or Christened, is being presented to Christ; and infants are baptised because the Church requires it; and the Church gives Baptism to Infants because our Saviour received little children with kindness when their parents took them to him. He commanded his disciples to suffer little children to come unto him, and not to forbid them.

Questions.---Is that which you told me is your name, your Christian name or your Surname? [Ans. My Christian name.] Why is it called your Christian name? [Ans. Because it was given me when I was made a Christian.] When was that? [Ans. When I was baptised or christened.] Who are meant by your godfathers and godmothers? [ins. Friends who answered for me when I was christened.] Why had you godfathers and godmothers? [Ans. Because I could not answer for myself.] What were you then? [Ans. A little infant.] Why did your parents have you baptised in your infancy? [Ans. Because the Church requires it.] Why does the Church give Baptism to infants? [Ans. Because our Saviour commanded his disciples to suffer little children to come unto him.] Is not the bringing children to be made Christians bringing them to Christ? [Ans. Yes.] Whose member were you made at your baptism? [Ans. A member of Christ.] Whose child were you made? [Ans. A child of God.] What was you made an inheritor of? [Ans. The kingdom of heaven.]

Explanation.---By a member of Christ is meant a member of the Holy Catholic Church, of which Christ is the Head.. By a child of God, is meant one to whom God will be a heavenly father for Christ's sake. By an inheritor of the king-dom of heaven, is meant one for whom an inheritance is pro-

vided in the kingdom of heaven. The being baptised is beingtaken into the Christian Covenant; and the three things. which have been just now explained to you, are the three. great privileges of this covenant.

Questions.---What is meant by a member of Christ? [Ans: A member of the Holy Catholic Church.] Who is the Head of this church? [4ns. Christ.] What is meant by a child of God? [Ans. One to whom God will be a father for Christ's sake.] What is meant by an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven? [Ans. One for whom an inheritance is provided in the kingdom of heaven.] Are not these very great privileges? [ans. Yes.] What covenant do they belong to? Ans. A member of Christ, the child of God, and an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven.] Can you expect to enjoy these great privileges without doing. something on your part? [Ans. No.] Did your godfathers promise any thing in your name? [Ans. Yes.] ·

Question-What did your Godfathers and Godmothers then for you, that is, at your baptism?

Answer. They did promise and vow three things in my name.-First, that I should renounce the devil and all his works, the pomps and vanity of this 'wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh.Secondly, that I should believe all the Articles of the Christian Faith.-And, thirdly, that I should keep God's holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of my life.

Explanation.--Your godfathers and godmothers made a promise to the Church, that you should comply with the condition of the Christian Covenant; and they made a solemn vow to: God, that you should do the three things which are required of all to whom the Privileges of the Christian Covenant are granted. To renounce the devil and all his works, signifies to abhor the devil, and to promise that you will not let him lead you into a life of wickedness, but will devote yourself to the service of God. To renounce the pomps and vanities of this wicked world, significs to promise that you will not set your affections upon any thing in this world, but be ready to give up all the riches, ho nours, and pleasures of it, rather than part with your heavenly
