Because it was kept in a holy manner.] Should it not be kept so still? [Ans. Yes.] What is the Thursday in this week called? [Ans. Maundy Thursday.] What did our Saviour institute on this day? [Ans. The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.] What Collect is used for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in Passion week [Ans. the Sunday collect.]

Good Friday.

Instruction.---This day is set apart in commemoration of our Saviour's Crucifixion. It is called Good Friday on account of the blessed effects of our Saviour's sufferings; but it is usually observed by pious Christians as a day of fasting and humiliation; for since Christ died for the sins of the world, it becomes us to mourn for those sins, and to humble our. souls before God. It is a sad thing that this day is so little observed as it is at present.

Questions.---Why is the day set apart for the commemoration of our Saviour's crucifixion called Good Friday? [Ans On account of the blessed effects of our Saviour's sufferings.] What are the blessed effects? [Ans. The salvation of mankind.] How is it passed by pious Christians? [Ans. As a day of fasting and humiliation.] Should not we pass it so? [Ans. Yes.]

The First Collect for Good Friday.

Instruction.---In this collect we pray for ourselves and for the rest of the congregation present.`

Questions.---Why do we call ourselves the family of God? [Ans. Because God is our heavenly Father.] What was our Redeemer content to do, that we might become the chi!dren of God? [Ans. To be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, and to suffer death upon the cross.[ If we desire our Heavenly Father to behold us graciously as his family, ought we not to live as becomes the children of God? [Ans. Yes.]

The Second Collect.

Instruction.---In this Collect we pray for the Holy Catholic Church.

Questions.---Are not there many Christian churches, be

sides that particular one to which we belong? [Ans. Yes.] What do all Christian churches considered as one body make? [Ans. The Holy Catholic Church.) Are there not every where different estates or ranks of men, high and low, rich and poor? [Ans. Yes.] Has not every member of Christ's church some calling or vocation? [Ans. Yes.] What is meant by a ministry? [Ans. Some employment in the church. Is it not our duty to serve God truly in our respective callings? [Ans. Yes.] Whose help must we have to do this? [Ans. The help of the Holy Spirit.]

The Third Collect.

Instruction.---We pray here for the enemies of Christianity. The Jews were the chosen people of God, but have long been cast off for refusing to own Christ. The Turks are Mahometans, they follow the religion of the impostor Mahomet, who pretended to be a prophet, and established his, doctrine by force of arms. Infidels are those who will not believe that the Christian religion was revealed from heaven. Heretics are those who set up their private opinions in oppoistion to the doctrines of the Church. When we say in the Lord's prayer thy kingdom come," we do the same as pray that all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Heretics, may be brought into the flock of Christ.

Questions.---What were the Jews once? [Ans, The chosen people of God.] In what state are the Jews now? [Ans. Scattered among all nations.] How came they to be cast off from being God's people? [Ans. They crucified our Saviour. Are the Turks christians? [Ans. No.] From whom did they take ther religion? [Ans. The impostor Mahomet.] What did he pretend to be? [Ans. A prophet.] Who are meant by infidels? [Ans. Those who will not believe the Christian religion.] Is it not a great crime to disbelieve what has been revealed by Christ and his Apostles? [Ans. Yes.] Who are Heretics? [Ans, Those who set up private opinions, contrary to the doctrines of the Church.1 Should Christians hate and persecute those who differ from them in matters of religion? [Ans. No.] What should they do? Ans. Pray for them.] Should not every Christian wish that all the world may belong to Christ's flock? [Ans. Yes.]

Easter Even.

Instruction.---This is the day after Good Friday; it was

appointed as a fast in commemoration of our Saviour's lying in the grave.

Instruction.---The death of Christ, into which we were baptized, signifies a death which will be followed by a glorious resurrection; but in order to partake of this, we must mortify all those corrupt and evil affections, which we have as children of Adam---to mortify, means to strive against them, and to resolve to do the will of God, however contrary to the desires of the flesh. Whosoever doeth this to the best of his power, will be buried with Christ, that is, he will go to his grave with the certainty of being raised to a glorious resurrection, through the merits of a crucified Redeemer.

Questions.--What is Easter Even kept in remembrance of? [Ans. Our Saviour's lying in the grave.] Into whose death are we baptized? [ns. Into our Saviour's.] How long did our Lord remain in the grave? [Ans. Only three days.] Shall we remain for ever in our graves? [Ans. No.] By whose power shall we be raised? Ans. Christ's.] What must we do in respect to our corrupt and evil affections, if we hope for a glorious resurrection? [Ans. Mortify them.] By whose merits do we hope for a joyful resurrection---our own, or those of Jesus Christ? [Ans. Jesus Christ's.] Will the merits of Jesus Christ save all persons, both good and bad? [Ans. No.] What is required of us in order to our obtaining the benefits of his merits? [Ans. That we should endeavour to be good like him.] Is not death the gate of life? [Ans. Yes.] What life does it open to us? [Ans.. Everlasting life.] Is death dreadful to those who look forward to a happy life in heaven? [Ans. No.] ·

Easter Day.

This festival is kept in commemoration of our Saviour's resurrection from the dead, as the feast of the Passover was kept in remembrance of God's passing over the houses of the Israelites, when he slew all the first-born of Egypt.

The three anthems, taken from Scripture, which are appointed instead of she psalm, O come, let us sing unto the Lord, are sung in Cathedrals, but read in other churches.

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, &c. Instruction.---Christ is called our Passover, because he was sacrificed for mankind, as the paschal lamb was for the Israélites. The Jewish Passover was eaten with unleavened bread; the Christian Passover is to be kept with sincerity and truth.

Questions.---What part of Scripture is this? [Ans. 1st Corinthians, chap. v. verse 7.] Why do we call Christ our Passover? [Ans. Because he was sacrificed for us.] What sort of bread were the Jews commanded to eat on this occasion? [Ans. Unleavened bread.] What is unleavened bread? [Ans. Bread made without any thing to make it work.] What should we put away from us when we keep this joyful feast? [Ans. Malice and wickedness.] What should we keep this feast with? [Ans. Sincerity and truth.]

Christ being raised from the dead, &c.

Instruction.---It is a great comfort to think that Christ will die no more; because it is an assurance to us, that after we ourselves rise from the dead we shall die no more.

Questions.---What part of Scripture is this? [Ans. Rom. vi..] Has death any more power over Christ [Ans. No.] How many times was he required to die for the sins of mankind? Ans. Once.] How many times are mankind to die? [Ans. Once.] What did Christ purchase for mankind by his death? [Ans. Everlasting life.] Is it not very comfortable to think we can die but once? [Ans. Yes.]

Christ is risen from the dead, &c.

Instruction.---Christ is called the first fruits of them that slept, because by raising his own body, he gave an earnest that he would raise all mankind as he before promised.

Questions.What part of Scripture is this? [Ans. 1st of Corinthians xv. 20.] Who has Christ promised to raise from the dead? [Ans. All mankind.] What pledge or earnest has Christ given that he will do so? [Ans. He raised his own body.] Why is it said that in Adam all die? [Ans. Because Adam brought death upon all mankind.] Why is it said that in Christ all shall be made alive? [Ans. Because Christ has redeemed all mankind.] Are they all sure of entering into heaven? [Ans. No.] Could we have been saved without Christ's sacrifice? [Ans. No.] What is the valuable blessing that we on this day commemorate? [Ans. Redemption.] What is due from us to God for such a blessing? [Ans. Our heartiest thanks and praises.]

Read the Collect.

Questions---What has God overcome through the death of his only begotten Son? [Ans. Death.] What has he

opened to us? [Ans. The gates of everlasting life.] Are the whole human race sure of rising from the dead? [Ans. Yes.] What sort of life must we live in order to enter heaven? [Ans. A good life.] What does God graciously put into our minds? [Ans. Good desires.] How can we bring these to good effect? [Ans. By God's continual help.] What sort of desires would our own corrupt nature lead us to, without the special grace of God preventing them? [Ans. Bad desires.] What then should we daily pray for? [Ans. God's grace.]

Monday and Tuesday in Easter Week.

Instruction.---These two days were originally set apart by the church, as days of extraordinary devotion, in order that Christians might have leisure to meditate upon our Saviour's resurrection, and raise their thoughts to heaven, but they are very differently kept in these days.

Questions.---Do you think it right to make Easter Monday and Tuesday days of frolic and idle merriment? [Ans. No.] Should we commit on those days the very sins which if not repented of, destroy the benefits of Christ's resurrection? Ans. No.] Will not the day of resurrection be indeed a sad day for the wicked? [Ans. Yes.] Which is it, a dull or pleasant thing, to think on the joys of heaven? [Ans. A pleasant thing.] What collect is used on Monday and Tuesday? [Ans. The same as for Sunday.].

First Sunday after Easter.

Instruction.---When we believe in our Redeemer, and repent of our sins, God does not regard us as sinners, but as just persons, because our Redeemer has taken our guilt upon himself, and suffered punishment in our stead; we are then said to have justification. But at the same time we must remember, that we can have no justification through Christ, if we keep malice and wickedness in our hearts.

Questions.---What did our Saviour do for our justification? Ans. He died for our sins, and rose again.] What must we put away if we would continue in a state of justification? [Ans. Malice and wickedness.] How must we serve God? [Ans. In pureness of living and truth.] What must we pray for to enable us to do so? [Ans. The help of the Holy Spirit.]
