The garments he assumes

Are light and majesty ; His glories shine

No mortal eye With beams so bright, Can bear the sight. 2 The thunders of his hand

Still keep the world in awe;
His wrath and justice stand

To guard his holy law;
And where his love His truth confirms
Resolves to bless, And seals the grace.
3 Through all his ancient works

Surprising wisdom shines,
Confounds the powers of hell,

And breaks their cursed designs; Strong is his arm, His great decrees, And shall fulfil

His sovereign will. 4 And can this mighty King

Of glory condescend?
And will he write his name,

My father, and my friend ? —
I love his name ! Join all my powers,
I love his word!

And praise the Lord.

Holiness of God.
HOLY and reverend is the name

Of our eternal King;
"Thrice holy Lord, the angels cry-

Thrice holy,' let us sing !
2 The deepest reverence of the mind,

Pay, O my soul, to God;
Lift, with thy hands, a holy heart,

To his sublime abode.

3 With sacred awe pronounce his name,

Whom words nor thoughts can reach; A contrite heart shall please him more

Than noblest forms of speech.
4 Thou holy God! preserve my soul

From all pollution free;
The pure in heart are thy delight,

And they thy face shall see.

PROVIDENCE AND GOVERNMENT

OF GOD.

C. M. 31

Purposes of God developed by his Providence. GOD moves in a mysterious way,

His wonders to perform ;
He plants his footsteps in the sea,

And rides upon the storm.
Deep, in unfathomable mines,

Of never-failing skill,
He treasures up his bright designs,

And works his sovereign will.
3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take ;

The clouds ye so much dread,
Are big with mercy-and shall break

With blessings on your head.
4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his

grace ;
Behind a frowning providence,

He hides a smiling face.
Ő His purposes will ripen fast,

But sweet will be the flower.

hour :

6 Blind unbelief is sure to err,

And scan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

The Mysteries of Providence.
THY way, O Lord, is in the sea ;

Thy paths I cannot trace,
Nor comprehend the mystery

Of thine unbounded grace.
2 'Tis but in part I know thy will;

I bless thee for the sight;-
When will thy love the rest reveal,

In glory's clearer light?
3 With rapture I shall then survey

Thy providence and grace;
And spend an everlasting day

In wonder, love, and praise. 33

Jehovah the Shepherd of his people.
THE Lord my shepherd is;

I shall be well supplied;
Since he is mine, and I am his,

What can I want beside ? 2 He leads me to the place,

Where heavenly pasture grows;
Where living waters gently pass,

And full salvation flows. 3 If e'er I go astray,

He doth my soul reclaim;
And guides me in his own right way,

For his most holy name. 4 While he affords his aid,

I cannot yield to fear;

Tho'I should walk thro’ death's dark shade,

My shepherd's with me there. 34

Exhortation to adore and praise Jehovah.
COME—sound his praise abroad,

And hymns of glory sing:
Jehovah is the sovereign God,

The universal King.
2 Come-worship at his throne,

Come-bow before the Lord ;
We are his work, and not our own;

He formed us by his word. 3 To-day attend his voice,

Nor dare provoke his rod;
Come-like the people of his choice,

And own your gracious God. 35

Trust in God and Deliverance. I WAITED meekly for the Lord,

He bowed to hear my cry: He saw me resting on his word,

And brought salvation nigh. 2 Firm on a rock-he made me stand,

And taught my cheerful tongue To praise the wonders of his hand,

In new and thankful song.
3 I'll spread his works of grace abroad,

The saints with joy shall hear,
And sinners learn to make my God

Their only hope and fear. 36

Praise to the great Jehovah. BE thou exalted, O my God,

Above the heavens, where angels dwel)

Thy power on earth be known abroad,

And land to land thy wonders tell.
2 My heart is fixed-my song shall raise

Immortal honors to thy name;
Awake, my tongue, to sound his praise,

My tongue—the glory of my frame. 3 High o'er the earth his mercy reigns,

And reaches to the utmost sky ;
His truth to endless years remains,

When lower worlds dissolve and die. 4 Be thou exalted, O my God,

Above the heavens, where angels dwell;
Thy power on earth be known abroad,
Ånd land to land thy wonders tell.

Creation and Providence.
LORD, when my raptured thought surveys

Creation's beauties o'er,
All nature joins to teach thy praise,

And bid my soul adore.
2 Where'er I turn my gazing eyes,

Thy radiant footsteps shine ;
Ten thousand pleasing wonders rise,

And speak their source divine. 3 On me thy providence has shone

With gentle, smiling rays;
O let my lips and life make known

Thy goodness and thy praise.
4 All-bounteous Lord, thy grace impart;

O teach me to improve
Thy gifts with ever-grateful heart;

Ånd crown them with thy love.
