2 Yet earthly pleasure still hath charms,

And earthly love my bosom warms;
Though cold

heart to love divine, And cold, my bleeding Lord! to thine. 3 Lord, draw my best affections hence,

Above this world of sin and sense;
Cause them to soar beyond the skies,
And rest not, till to thee they rise.

God a Refuge in Trouble.
WHEN overwhelmed with grief,

My heart within me dies,
Helpless, and far from all relief,

To heaven I lift mine eyes. 2 Oh! lead me to the rock

That's high above my head,
And make the covert of thy wings

My shelter and my shade. 3 Within thy presence, Lord,

Forever I'll abide;
Thou art the tower of my defence,

The refuge where I hide.

C. M. 309

Prayer for spiritual Quickening.
AGAIN, indulgent Lord, return,

With sweet and quickening grace, To cheer and warm my sluggish soul,

And speed me in my race. 2 Awake, my love, my faith, my hope,

My fortitude, and joy: Vain world, be gone-let things above

My happy thoughts employ.

3 Whilst thee, my Saviour, and my God,

I would forever own;
Drive each rebellious, rival lust,

Each traitor, from the throne.
4 Instruct my mind—my will subdue,

To heaven my passions raise ; And let my life forever be Devoted to thy praise.

The Citizen of Zion.
WHO, O Lord, when life is o’er,
Shell to heaven's blest mansions soar;
Who, an ever-welcome guest,

In thy holy place shall rest?
2 He, whose heart thy love has warmed;

He, whose will to thine conformed,
Bids his life unsullied run;

He, whose words and thoughts are one ;3 He, who shuns the sinner's road,

Loving those who love their God;
Who, with hope, and faith unfeigned,

Treads the path by thee ordained ;4 He, who trusts in Christ alone,

Not in aught himself hath done :
He, great God, shall be thy care,
And thy choicest blessings share.

L. M. 311

Penitent View of the Saviour's Sufferings.
LORD, when my thoughts delighted rove
Amid the wonders of thy love,
Sweet hope revives my drooping heart,
And bids intruding fears depart.

2 Repentant sorrow fills my heart,

But mingling joy allays the smart;
Oh! may my future life declare

The sorrow and the joy sincere. 3 Be all my heart, and all my days

Devoted to my Saviour's praise ;
And let my glad obedience prove
How much I owe-how much I love.

C. M. 312

Reconciliation by Christ's Death.
AND are we now brought near to God,

Who once at distance stood ?
Did Jesus, to effect this change,

Pour out his precious blood? 2 Oh for a song of ardent praise,

To bear our souls above!
What should allay our lively hope,

Or damp our flaming love!
3 Then let us join the heavenly choirs,

To praise our glorious King! Oh may that love which spread this feast

Inspire us while we sing !

Pardon and Peace implored. LAMB of God! whose bleeding love

We now recall to mind,
Send the answer from above,

And let us mercy find :
Think on us, who think on thee;

Every burdened soul release;
Oh remember Calvary,

And bid us go in peace!

2 By thine agonizing pain,

And bloody sweat, we pray-.
By thy dying love to man,

Take all our sins away:
Burst our bonds, and set us free,

From all sin do thou release;
Oh remember Calvary,
And bid us go

in 3 Through thy blood, by faith applied,

Let sinners pardon feel;
Speak us freely justified,

And all our sickness heal:
By thy passion on the tree,

Let our griefs and troubles.cease ;
Oh remember Calvary,
And bid us go

Privileges of Adoption.
BLESSED are the sons of God;
They are bought with Jesus' blood;
They are ransomed from the grave-
Life eternal they shall have :
With them numbered may we be,

Here, and in eternity.
2 They are justified by grace;

They enjoy the Saviour's peace;
All their sins are washed away ;
They shall stand in God's great day:
With them numbered may we be,

Here, and in eternity.
3 They produce the fruits of grace,

In the works of righteousness;
They are harmless, meek, and mild,
Holý, blamedess, undefiled:

With them numbered may we be,

Here, and in eternity.
4 They are lights upon the earth,

Children of a heavenly birth ;
One with God, with Jesus one;
Glory is in them begun:
With them numbered may we be,
Here, and in eternity.

Backslider's Thanks for renewed Pardon.
LORD, and is thine anger gone,

And art thou pacified?
After all that I have done,

Dost thou no longer chide ?
2 Let thy love my heart constrain,

And all my restless passions sway:
Keep me, lest I turn again,

From out the narrow way. 3 As the apple of thine eye,

Thy weakest servant keep;
Help me at thy feet to lie,

And there forever weep:
4 Tears of joy mine eyes o’erflow,

That I have any hope of heaven:
Much of love I ought to know,

For I have much forgiven.

S. M. 316

Vigor and Watchfulness in the Christian Warfare.
SOLDIERS of Christ, arise,

Now put your armor on,
Strong in the strength which God-supplies,

Through his eternal Son;
