Queft. 15. What was the work the Father gave him to do?

Anfw. It was to affume holy human nature, to yield a perfect finless obedience to the whole law, and to give a complete fatisfaction to juftice, for man's fin, by his meritorious fufferings and death, Heb. ii. 14. Mat. iii. 15. Luke xxiv. 26.

Queft. 16. How does Chrift glorify God in heaven? Anfw. By appearing in the prefence of God for us, and applying, by the power of his Spirit, that redemption which he purchased by the price of his blood on earth. Heb. ix. 24. Tit. iii. 5, 6. Acts

ii. 33.

Queft. 17. When is it that a finner begins uprightly to aim at the glory of God?

Anfw. When, through a faith of God's operation, he believes in Chrift. 1 John v. 10.

Queft. 18. Can no man glorify God. acceptably, unless he first believe in Christ?

Anfw. No for without faith it is impoffible to pleafe him; and whatsoever is not of faith is fin, Heb. xi. 6. Rom. xiv. 23.

Queft. 19. How is it that faith in Chrift glorifies God?

Anfw. As it fets to its feal to the record of God, and unites us to Chrift, from whom only our fruit is found. John iii. 33. Hof. xiv. 8.

Queft. 20. Is not God glorified by the good works of believers?

Anfw. Yes: Herein, fays Chrift, is my Father glorified, that ye bring forth much fruit, John xv. 8. Queft. 21.. What are these fruits brought forth by believers whereby God is glorified?

Anfw. They may be fummed up in faith working by love, and their aiming at univerfal obedience to the law as a rule. Gal. v. 6.

Queft. 22. How may we glorify God in eating and drinking?

Anfw. By

By taking a right to the supports of natural life, through the fecond Adam, the heir of all things, who has purchased a covenant right to temporal, as well as fpiritual mercies for his people, and thankfully acknowledging God for the fame. Rom. yiii. 32. 1 Cor. iii. 21, 22, 23. Phil. iv. 19. 1 Tim. 4, 5. Ifa. xxxiii, 16.

Queft. 23. How must we glorify God in our religious worship, and other acts of obedience?

Anfw. By doing all that we do in the name of the Lord Jefus, worshipping God in the spirit, rejoicing in Chrift Jefus, and having no confidence in the flesh, Col. iii. 17. Phil. iii. 3.

Queft. 24. What is it, next to the glory of God, we should aim at ?

Anfw. Next unto God's glory, we are to aim at the enjoyment of him. Pfal. Ixxiii. 23, 26.

Q 25. Why are we to aim at the enjoyment of God? Anf. Because he is the chief good of the rational foul; and nothing, befides him, is either fuitable to the nature, or fatisfying to the defires of the foul of man. Pfalm cxliv. 15. and cxvi. 7.

Queft. 26. How may a finite creature enjoy an infinite God?

Anfw. By taking, and rejoicing in him, as its everlasting and up-making portion. Pfalm xvi. 5, 6. and xxxvii. 4. Hab. iii. 17, 18.

Queft. 27. Did our first parents, in a late of innocence, enjoy God?

Anfw. Yes there was perfect friendship and fellowship between God and them; for, God made man upright, Eccl. vii. 29.

Queft. 28. What broke that blessed friendship and fellowship?

Anfw. Sin Our iniquities have feparated between us and our God, and have hid his face from us. Ifa. lix. 2.

Queft, 29. Can a finner, in a natural ftate, enjoy God, or have any fellowship with him?

Anfw. No: for, what communion hath light with darkness? and what concord hath Chrifl with Belial? 2 Cor. vi. 14, 15.

Queft 30. How may a loft finner recover the eng joyment of God, and fellowship with him?

Answ. As we lost it by our fall in the first Adam, fo it can only be recovered by union with a fecond Adam; for, there is no coming to God but by him. Rom. v. 18, 19. John xiv. 6.

Queft. 31. When is it that a finner begins to enjoy God?

Anfw. When, having received Chrift by faith, he refts upon him, and upon God in him, for righteoufnefs and ftrength, and out of his fulness receives and grace for grace. Ifa. xlv. 24. John i. 16. and

x. 9.

Q. 32. What are the eternal means by, or, in which, we are to feek after the enjoyment of God?

Anfw. In all the ordinances of his worship, pub. lic, private, and secret; such as, the word read and heard, the facraments, prayer, meditation, fafting, thanksgiving, and the like.

Queft. 33. Do we find the faints of God admitted to enjoy God in these?

Anfw. Yes these are the trifting places where his name is recorded; and there he has promifed to come and bless them and accordingly we find them much employed in thefe duties, and expreffing the utmost regard for the ordinances of his grace. Exod. xx. 24. Pfalm lxiii. 1, 2. and lxxxiv. 1, 2. Song iii. 1, 2, 3.

Queft. 34. What fatisfaction has the foul in the enjoyment of God?

Anfw. Unfpeakably more gladness than when corn, wine, and all earthly comforts, do most abound. Pfalm iv. 17. Prov. iii. 17.

Queft. 35. Is there any difference betwixt the enjoyment of God in this life, and that which the faints hall obtain in the life to come?

Anfw. Not an effential, but a gradual difference, as to the manner and measure of it.

Queft. 36. What is the difference as to the manner of the enjoyment here and hereafter ?

Anfw. Here, the enjoyment is mediate, by the intervention of means; hereafter, it will be immediate, without any use of these means: Here we fee darkly, as through a glass, but then, FACE TO FACE, 1 John iii. 2. 1 Cor. xiii. 12. Rev. xxi. 22.

Queft. 37. What is the difference as to the measure of the enjoyment in this life, and that which is to

'come?

Anfw. In this life, the enjoyment is only partial: in that which is to come, it will be full and complete: here, the enjoyment is only in the feed, or firft fruits; there, it will be in the full harveft. Pfalm cxxvi. 5, 6.

Queft. 38. Is the partial enjoyment of God in grace here, a fure pledge of the full enjoyment of him in glory hereafter?

Anfw. It is both the pledge and earnest thereof. Eph. i. 13, 14. Pfalm lxxxiv. 11.

Queft. 39. Doth the gracious Joul, in that state, fully receive its chief end?

Anfw. Yes in regard that then it fhall be brimful of God, and celebrate his praises with high and uninterrupted Hallelujahs, through all eternity. Pfalm xvi. 11. Isaiah xxxv. 10. Rev. v. 12, 13, 14.

Queft. 40. Why is the glorifying God made the leading part of man's chief end, and fet before the enjoyment of him?

Anfw. Becaufe, as God's design in glorifying himfelf, was the reafon and foundation of his design in making man happy in the enjoyment of him; fo he has made our aiming at his glory, as our chief end,

to

to be the very way and means of our attaining the enjoyment of him. Rom. xi. 36. Pfalm 1. 23. Queft 41. Whether is our happiness, in the enjoyment of God, to be our chief end?

Anfw. No; but the glory of God itself in our aiming at which chiefly, we cannot miss the enjoyment of him, Ifa. xlii 8. and xlviii, 11. Pfal. xci. 14, 15, 16.

Queft. 42. Is not our delighting in the glory of God to be reckoned our chief end?

Anfw. No we muft fet the glory of God above our delight therein, otherwife our delight is not chiefly in God, but in ourselves. Our fubjective delighting in the glory of God, belongs to the enjoyment of him, whofe glory is above the heavens, and infinitely above our delight therein, Ifa. ii. 11, 17. Pfalm xxi. 5. and cxiii. 14. and cxlviii. 13.

Queft. 43. Whom does God dignify with the enjoy ment of himself, in time, and for ever?

Anfw. Thefe whom he helps actively to glorify and honour him: for he has faid, Them that honour me, I will honour, 1 Sam. ii. 30.

Queft. 44. Does any thing fo much fecure our happy enjoyment of God, as the concern that the glory of God has therein?

Anfw. No: for as God cannot but reach the great end of his own glory, fo, when the glory and honour of his perfections is concerned and engaged, by promise in Chrift, for falvation and Irappiness, we cannot come fhort of it, because it stands upon his honour and glory to make it good. Tit. i. 2. Heb. x. 23.

Queft. 45. How does it appear, that the enjoyment of God, which is connected with the glorifying of him, Shall be for ever?

Anfw. Because he who is the object enjoyed is the everlasting God; and the spiritual enjoyment of him is not transitory, like the paffing enjoyments of PART I.
