111 The Redeemer's Commission.

1 COME, happy souls, approach your God

With new melodious songs;

Come, render to almighty grace
The tribute of your tongues.

2 So strange, so boundless was the love
That pitied dying men,
The Father sent his equal Son

To give them life again.

1

3 Thy hands, dear Jesus, were not armed
With a revenging rod;

No hard commission to perform-
The vengeance of a God.

4 But all was mercy, all was mild,
And wrath forsook the throne,
When Christ on the kind errand came,
And brought salvation down.

5 Here, sinners, you may heal your wounds,
And wipe your sorrows dry;
Trust in the mighty Saviour's name,
And you shall never die.

6 See, dearest Lord, our willing souls
Accept thine offered grace;

We bless the great Redeemer's love,
And give the Father praise.

Gratitude.

Lord of life, the Saviour, dies,
For mortal crimes a sacrifice:
What love, what mercy-how divine!
Jesus, and can I call thee mine?
2 Be all my heart and all my days
Devoted to my Saviour's praise;
And let my glad obedience prove
How much I owe, how much I love.

3 Let humble, penitential wo,
With painful, pleasing anguish flow;
And thy forgiving smiles impart
Life, hope, and joy to every heart.

"Chief among Ten Thousand."

AJESTIC sweetness sits enthroned
Upon the Saviour's brow;

His head with radiant glories crowned,
His lips with grace o'erflow.

2 He saw me plunged in deep distress,
And flew to my relief;

For me he bore the shameful cross,
And carried all my grief.

3 To him I owe my life and breath,
And all the joys I have:

He makes me triumph over death,
And saves me from the grave.
4 To heaven, the place of his abode,
He brings my weary feet;
Shows me the glories of my God,
And makes my joys complete.
5 Since from his bounty I receive
Such proofs of love divine,
Had I a thousand hearts to give,
Lord, they should all be thine.

Condescension of Christ.

AND did the Holy and the Just,
A The sovereign of the skies,

Stoop down to wretchedness and dust,
That guilty man might rise?

2 Yes-the Redeemer left his throne-
His radiant throne on high-
Surprising mercy!-love unknown!
To suffer-bleed-and die.

3 Jesus, my soul adoring bends
To love so full, so free;
And may I hope that love extends
Its saving power to me?

4 What glad returns can I impart
For favors so divine?
all-this worthless heart,
And make it wholly thine.

115 Christ's Resurrection and Ascension. ANGELS, roll the rock away;

1

Death, yield up thy mighty prey:
See, he rises from the tomb,
Glowing with immortal bloom.
2 'Tis the Saviour! angels, raise
Your eternal songs of praise;
Let the earth's remotest bound
Hear the joy-inspiring sound.
3 Now, ye saints, lift up your eyes,
Now to glory see him rise;
Hosts of angels on the road
Hail and sing th' incarnate God.
4 Heaven unfolds its portals wide!
Glorious conqueror, through them ride;
King of Glory, mount the throne-
Boundless empire is thy own.

7s.

5 Praise him, all ye heavenly choirs ;
Praise, and sweep your golden lyres ;
Shout, O earth, in rapturous songs,
From ten thousand thousand tongues. Gibbons.

YES

The Resurrection of Christ.

VES, the Redeemer rose;
The Saviour left the dead;

And o'er our hellish foes

High raised his conquering head; In wild dismay the guards around Fall to the ground, and sink away.

Lo, the angelic bands

In full assembly meet,

To wait his high commands,

And worship at his feet;

Joyful they come, and wing their way
From realms of day, to Jesus' tomb.

Then back to heaven they fly,

The joyful news to bear:
Hark, as they soar on high,

What music fills the air!

Their anthems say, "Jesus, who bled,
Has left the dead; he rose to-day."

4

Ye mortals, catch the sound,
Redeemed by him from hell;
And send the echo round

The globe on which you dwell;
Transported cry, "Jesus, who bled,
Has left the dead, no more to die."
5 All hail, triumphant Lord,

Who sav'st us with thy blood!
Wide be thy name adored,
Thou rising, reigning God.

With thee we rise, with thee we reign,
And empires gain, beyond the skies.

The Resurrection of Christ.

1 MORNING breaks upon the tomb,
Jesus scatters all its gloom;

Day of triumph through the skies-
See the glorious Saviour rise!
2 Ye who are of death afraid,
Triumph in the scattered shade;
Drive your anxious cares away;
See the place where Jesus lay.
3 Christian, dry your flowing tears,
Chase your unbelieving fears;
Look on his deserted grave;
Doubt no more his power to save.

Christ, awhile to mortals given,
Enters now the gates of heaven.
2 There the glorious triumph waits;
Lift your heads, eternal gates!
Christ hath vanquished death and sin;
Take the King of Glory in.

3 See, the heaven its Lord receives!
Yet he loves the earth he leaves:
Though returning to his throne,
Still he calls mankind his own.
4 Still for us he intercedes,
His prevailing death he pleads;

Near himself prepares our place,
Great Precursor of our race.

5 What though parted from our sight,
Far above yon starry height;
Thither our affections rise,
Foll'wing him beyond the skies.

119 Jesus glorified. John vii. 41, 52.

1 H Haii! thou "Galilean" King!
AIL! thou once despised Jesus!
Thou didst suffer to release us;
Thou didst free salvation bring;
Hail, thou agonizing Saviour,
Bearer of our sin and shame;
By thy merits we find favor;
Life is given through thy name.
2 Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory,
There for ever to abide :

All the heavenly hosts adore thee,
Seated at thy Father's side:
There for sinners thou art pleading,
There thou dost our place prepare,
Ever for us interceding

Friend and Mediator there.

3 Worship, honor, power, and blessing,
Thou art worthy to receive;
Loudest praises without ceasing,
Meet it is for us to give ;
Help, ye bright, angelic spirits,
Bring your sweetest, noblest lays;
Help to sing our Saviour's merits,
Help to chant Immanuel's praise.

Christ our Intercessor.-Heb. vii. 25.
TE lives-the great Redeemer lives!
What joy the bless'd assurance gives!

НЕ

And now, before his Father God,
Pleads the full merit of his blood.

2 Repeated crimes awake our fears,
And justice armed with frowns appears;
But in the Saviour's lovely face
Sweet mercy smiles, and all is

peace.
