HYMN

Appeal to CHRIST.

I.

XVII.

John xxi. 15

O not I love thee, O my Lord?
Behold my heart and fee;

And turn each curfed idol out,

That dares to rival thee.

II.

Do not I love thee from my foul?
Then let me nothing love:
Dead be my heart to ev'ry joy,
When Jefus cannot move.
II.

Is not thy name melodious still

To mine attentive ear?

Doth not each pulfe with pleasure bound
My Saviour's voice to hear?
IV.

Thou know'ft I love thee, dearest LORD:

But O! I long to foar

Far from the fphere of mortal joys,
And learn to love thee niore.

Thro' all fucceeding Ages he

The fame hath been, the fame fhall be:
Immortal radiance gilds his head,

While ftars and funs wax old and fade.
III.

The fame his pow'r his flock to guard;
The fame his bounty to reward;
The fame his faithfulness and love

To faints on earth, and faints above.
IV.

Let nature change and fink and die;
Jefus fhall raife his chosen high,
And fix them near his ftable throne
In glory changeless as his own.

CHRIST precious to the Believer. 1 Peter

JESUS, I love thy charming name;

JESU
'Tis mufic to mine ear

Fain would I found it out fo loud,
That earth and heav'n fhould hear.

My tranfport, and my trust:
Jewels to me are empty toys,

HYMN XXI.

Worthy is the Lamb, &c. Rev. v. 12,

[blocks in formation]

Join all the human race,
Our Lord and God to blefs,
Praise ye his name;

In him let us rejoice,
Making a chearful noife,

And fay with heart and voice,
horthy the LAMB.

HYMN

III.

Where fhall I wash thefe fpots away,
And make my nature clean,
Since drops of penitential grief
Are tinctur'd ftill with fin?

IV.

Behold a torrent all-divine

Flows from the Saviour's fide, And ftrangely bears a cryftal ftream Amidst the purple tide.

V.

Here will I bathe my spotted soul,
And make it pure and fair;
Till not the eye of GOD difcern
One foul pollution there.
VI.

Then, dreft in robes of fnowy white,
I'll join the fhining band,

And learn new anthems to the Lamb,

While round his throne we ftand, ‡

This and the hymns preceding it were taken from Dr. DODDRIDGE'S Collection; for which I fhou'd have expreffed my acknowledgements in the PREFACE, had it not been worked off in the prefs, before I had refolved to introduce f many from the compofitions of that excellent and judicicus Divine; whofe name, together with that of Dr. WATTS, will be ever remembered with a peculiar veneration, by those who have perufed their incomparable writings in profe and verse

HYMN

III.

To hear the forrows thou haft felt,
Dear LORD, an adamant would melt;
But I can read each moving line,
And nothing moves this heart of mine.
IV.

Thy judgments too unmov'd I hear,
(Amazing thought!) which Devils fear,
Goodness and wrath in vain combine
To ftir this ftupid heart of mine.

V.

But fomething yet can do the deed,
And that dear fomething much I need ;
Thy Spirit can from drofs refine,
And move and melt this heart of mine.

VI.

Come then dear Jefus in this hour,
And let thy Spirit by his pow'r
Perfect the work, for it is thine,

And break and melt this heart of mine.

O! ev'ry one that thirfts, draw nigh,
('Tis GOD invites the fallen race)

Mercy and free falvation buy,

Buy wine and milk, and gospel-grace.
