And in this manner the prejudices, the ignorance, the paffions, the intereft of the flesh, and the fubtilty of the Devil have detain'd the truth in profound darkness, till in these later times God hath fet them in a perfect light. But one can't fufficiently wonder,that in fo great a light, yet there have been two perfons fufficiently prepoffeffed or ill enough difpofed, for the miftaking this Antichrift. The learned Grotius and Dr. Hammond have unhappily, and to the scandal of all Proteftants, ufed great endeavours to turn these prophecies of the Revelation another way. The one through his being wedded to the papifm, which he defended with all his might against the late Andrew River. And the other apparently for the fame reafon as Grotius, and it may be fo through his jealousy for the Epifcopal order, imagining that if the Pope, who calls himself the head of the Bishops, fhould be made Antichrift, fome difgrace would redound thence to the whole Epifcopal order. But fofeph Mede, the learned Usher Arch-bishop of Armagh, the learned Andrew Willet, and fo many other learned English men, that appear fo zealoufly for the government and order of Bishops, have continued to find Antichrift and the Pope in the defcriptions, which the prophecies have left us of him. And to speak freely, I am fo ftrongly perfwaded of this as an Article of the faith of the true Chriftians, that I can't hold them for good ones, who deny this truth after the events, and the labours of fo many great men have made it so very evident. I reckon the blindness of the papifts, and of their favourers in this point, among those prodigies, wherein we must acknow ledge fomething fuper-natural.
