Written in Latin in the early 15th century, The Imitation of Christ is perhaps second only to the Bible in importance in Christian thought. Thomas Hemerken, aka THOMAS KEMPIS (1380-1471), was a Christian monk and mystic from Kempen, Germany, and he intended this patchwork of medieval mysticism for the most sincere and dedicated of believers-monks, nuns-but lay Christians find wisdom in his encouragement and teaching of a direct path to a relationship with God. Readers of Christian theology and students of medieval literature alike will be fascinated by this work, one of the most powerful influences on modern spirituality and philosophy.

Стр. 114 - Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Стр. 40 - Many follow Jesus to the breaking of bread, but few to the drinking of the chalice of His Passion.
Стр. 132 - ... of the holy church. One is the table of the holy altar, having the holy bread, that is, the precious body of Christ ; The other is that of the divine law, containing holy doctrine, teaching the right faith, and firmly leading even within the veil, where is the holy of holies.
Стр. 26 - I could know that I should persevere to the end!" and immediately he heard a voice within him reply : "And if you knew it what would you do? Do now what you would do then, and you shall be quite secure." And being at once consoled and strengthened, he committed himself to the Divine Will, and his anxious disquietude ceased. He no longer wanted curiously to ask questions concerning his own future, but he rather sought to find out what was the acceptable and perfect will of God...
Стр. 2 - Vanity of vanities and all is vanity, except to love God and serve Him alone.
Стр. 42 - In the cross is salvation, in the cross is life, in the cross is protection against our enemies, in the cross is infusion of heavenly sweetness, in the cross is strength of mind, in the cross joy of spirit, in the cross the height of virtue, in the cross the perfection of sanctity.
Стр. 43 - And the more the flesh is wasted by affliction, so much the more is the spirit strengthened by inward grace. And sometimes he is so comforted with the desire of tribulation and adversity, for the love of conformity to the cross of Christ, that he would not wish to be without grief and tribulation; because he believes that he shall be unto God so much the more acceptable, the more and the more grievous things...
