The roseate hues of early dawn

There is a God, who heareth prayer
There is a land of pure delight
There is an eye that never sleeps
There is a path no fowl doth know
There is a safe and secret place
There is no sorrow, Lord, too light
There the wicked cease from troubling

Wake my spirit, wake and sing
Wants and yearnings that my tongue
Weak, to suffer'; strong, to save
We bless Thee, Lord, that wheresoe'er
Welcome sweet day, of days the best
We look around upon returning spring
Wert Thou to quench all mortal pride
We saw Thee not when Thou didst tread
We sing His love who once was slain
We sing the praise of Him who died
We've no abiding city here

[blocks in formation]

Who walks the waves in wondrous guise

When like a stranger on our sphere
When our heads are bowed with woe
When shrouding darkness passed away
When sore afflicted and afraid

Where high the heavenly temple stands
While from place to place I rove

...

While shepherds watch their flocks by night.
While war's dread sound is heard around
Who are these arrayed in white

Who hath ever seen Thy face

NOTE-The Hymn for Christmas Day, No. 46, has been set to
music by the Rev. W. H. Havergal. (Hart, Hatton Garden.) The
same music is suitable for Hymns 362 and 364.

The original and most suitable melody for Hymn 143 is pro-
curable at Novello's, price 3d.

For Hymn 105, the tune is The Spanish Chant.

Should this Hymnal be favourably received, it is intended to
publish ere long a Book of Tunes for the whole Collection.
Meanwhile, suitable tunes for a large portion of these hymns will be
found in the Tune Books for Hymns Ancient and Modern, and the
Church Psalter and Hymn Book, by the Rev. W. Mercer.
