She is a tree of life to them that lay hold

upon her:

And happy is every one that retaineth her.

January 8

-Prov. 3: 13-18.

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes:
Keep sound wisdom and discretion:

So shall they be life unto thy soul,
And grace to thy neck.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely,

And thy foot shall not stumble.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid:

Yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Be not afraid of sudden fear,

Neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

For the Lord shall be thy confidence,

And shall keep thy foot from being taken.
-Prov. 3: 21-26.

January 9

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom:

Good understanding have all they that do his

commandments:

His praise endureth for ever.

-Psa. 111: 10.

January 10

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; And a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.

-Prov. 1: 5.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise

More than ten mighty men which are in the city.
For there is not a just man upon earth,

That doeth good, and sinneth not.

Also take no heed unto all words that are
spoken;

Lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
For oftentimes also thine own heart

Knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast
cursed others.

All this have I proved by wisdom;

I said, I will be wise:

But it was far from me.

That which is far off, and exceeding deep,

Who can find it out?

-Ecc. 7: 19-26.

January 12

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God,

That giveth to all men liberally,

And upbraideth not;

And it shall be given him.

1

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.

[blocks in formation]

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth,
Where moth and rust doth corrupt,

And where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
Where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt,
And where thieves do not break through nor
steal:

Take no thought for your life,

What ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink;
Nor yet for your body,

What ye shall put on.

For the morrow shall take thought

For the things of itself.

Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

-Matt. 6: 19, 20, 25, 34.

January 15

Enter not into the path of the wicked,

And go not in the way of evil men.

Avoid it,

Pass not by it,

Turn from it,

And pass away.

But the path of the just is as the shining light, That shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

January 16

-Prov. 4: 14, 15, 18.

A little that a righteous man hath
Is better than the riches of many wicked.
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing:
But righteousness delivereth from death.

The Lord will not suffer the soul of the right-
eous to famish:

But he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

He that trusteth in his riches shall fall:
But the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

In the house of the righteous is much treasure:
But in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the
beginning;

But the end thereof shall not be blessed.
-Ps. 37: 16; Prov. 10: 2-3; 11: 28;
15: 6; 20: 21.

January 17

A man's gift maketh room for him,
And bringeth him before great men.

January 18

-Prov. 18: 16.

He that walketh righteously, and speaketh up-
rightly;

He that despiseth the gain of oppressions,
That shaketh his hands from holding of bribes,
That stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood,
And shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;
He shall dwell on high:

His place of defence shall be the munitions of

rocks:

Bread shall be given him;

His waters shall be sure.

January 19

-Isa. 33: 15-16.

He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good:

And whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.

The wise in heart shall be called prudent:

And the sweetness of the lips increaseth learn

ing.
