tion the names of Messrs. Philp and Hart, who, by exhibiting numerous drawings, made special and successful efforts to make this department attractive.

The Society is much indebted to Mr. W. R. Roebuck for the beautiful loan collection of characters from Shakspeare in colored crayons, and valuable water-color drawings by distinguished masters; also to those ladies and gentlemen who contributed and arranged the magnificent and large collection of Pottery and Porcelain, which was a new and distinguishing feature in the Exhibition; and to the Science and Art Department, South Kensington, for the very interesting and instructive collection of Food Analyses.

Several Lectures were delivered during the Exhibition, accounts of which will appear in the Annual Report.

The Library of the Society has received the usual additions during the year, a list of which is presented to you.

The Society invited the Members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to make their summer excursion for 1873 in the county of Cornwall. The invitation was accepted, and accordingly about 80 of their members came into the county in July, making Penzance their head-quarters. They expressed themselves highly pleased with their visit to the county, and tendered their special thanks to this Society for the reception given them at the Polytechnic Hall.

At the close of the year the Secretary, Mr. J. H. Collins, F.G.S., found it necessary, from the press of other important avocations, to place his resignation in the hands of the committee, and this was accepted, although much regret was felt at losing his valuable services. A resolution, expressive of their regret, has been drawn up and presented to him, together with the Society's First Silver Medal. The committee have appointed Mr. E. Kitto, the assistant-secretary, as his successor.

Four of the Vice-Presidents, viz., Samuel Fox, W. P. Dymond,

Rt. Hon. Lord Robartes and G. L. Basset, retire by rotation, and are not eligible for re-election. It will be necessary for the Society to elect four new vice-presidents to supply their places.

The committee have to record with much regret the great loss which the Society has sustained in the death of Mr. W. H. Bond, one of the earliest supporters of the Society, and a most able and energetic member of the committee; who was always ready to advance the best interests of the Society, and whose loss may not easily be replaced.

They would also refer with profound regret to the loss through death of Miss Elizabeth Carne, of Penzance, a lady whose estimable qualities were well-known, and whose love for and help in the advancement of science this and kindred institutions in the county can abundantly testify. Messrs. J. T. H. Peter and F. H. Thomas have been taken from us in the same manner.

ART UNION OF CORNWALL.-Report of Committee.

The ticket-books were checked by Messrs. Roberts and Kitto, the tickets by Messrs. Collins and Phillips, and put into the wheel and the prize tickets into another.

The total number of tickets sold was 932, amounting to £46 12s., and the Committee apportioned £47 to be divided as prizes. The value of the works of art selected was £64.

The tickets were drawn from the wheels by two disinterested persons, as regulated by the articles of the association, approved by the Lords' Committee of the Privy Council for Trade.

The Forty-first Annual Exhibition

Was opened at the Polytechnic Hall, Falmouth, at Eleven o'clock, on Tuesday, August 26th, 1873. The morning had been very wet, but about mid-day the weather cleared, so that there was a fair attendance of members and friends to hear the address of the President, Mr. A. Pendarves Vivian, M.P. Messrs. W. Fowler, M.P.; Henry Cole, Q.C.; R. W. Fox, F.R.S.; C. Fox; W. H. Preece, C.E.; Richard Taylor, F.G.S.; Colonel Tremayne; Lady Augusta Vivian; and Miss A. M. Fox; were among those present.

The body of the Hall was largely occupied by a collection of rare and valuable China and Porcelain, contributed by ladies and gentlemen of Cornwall; a very large collection of British Lace; and by a collection of Food Products, lent by the Department of Science and Art, South Kensington. Around the platform a large number of Machines and Models were placed, including the now celebrated Sand-blast Machine for engraving hard substances, the invention of Mr. B. C. Tilghman, Pennsylvania; and a large number of beautiful specimens of work executed by the machine. Here, also, at a later period of the Exhibition, was placed the ingenious Perpetual Log of the Rev. Edward Berthon, and his very valuable and beautiful Collapsible Lifeboat. The side Galleries were as fully occupied as usual with Oil and Water-Color Paintings, but in this instance they were principally
