And leave me in this world's wild maze, To follow ev'ry wand'ring star. 5 Lord, thy commands are clean and pure, Enlight'ning our beclouded eyes; Thy threat'nings just, thy promise sure, Thy gospel makes the simple wise. 6 Give me thy counsel for my guide, And then receive me to thy bliss: › All my desires and hopes beside, Are faint and cold, compar'd with this.

254. An Evening Hymn.

1 THUS far the Lord has led me on,

Thus far his pow'r prolongs my days, And ev'ry evening shall make known Some fresh memorial of his grace. 2 Much of my time has run to waste, And I, perhaps, am near my home; But he forgives my follies past,

He gives me strength for days to come. I lay my body down to sleep,

Peace is the pillow for my head; While well-appointed angels keep Their watchful stations round bed. my 4 In vain the sons of earth or hell

Tell me a thousand frightful things; My God in safety makes me dwell Beneath the shadow of his wings. [5 Faith in his name forbids my fears: O may thy presence ne'er depart! And in the morning make me hear The love and kindness of thy heart. 6 Thus when the night of death shall come, My flesh shall rest beneath the ground, And wait thy voice to rouse my tomb, With sweet salvation in the sound.]

255. A Song for Morning and Evening. 1 MY God, how endless is thy love! Thy gifts are ev'ry evening new;

And morning mercies from above,
Gently distill like early dew.

2 Thou spread'st the curtains of the night,
Great Guardian of my sleeping hours;
Thy sov'reign word restores the light,
And quickens all my drowsy powers.
3 I yield my pow'rs to thy command,
To thee I consecrate my days:
Perpetual blessings from thine hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

I'M

256. Not ashamed of the Gospel. "M not asham'd to own my Lord, Or to defend his cause, Maintain the honour of his word, The glory of his cross.

2 Jesus, my God! I know his name,
His name is all my trust;

Nor will he put my soul to shame,
Nor let my hope be lost.

3 Firm as his throne his promise stands,
And he can weil secure

What I've committed to his hands,
'Till the decisive hour.
4 Then will he own my worthless name
Before his Father's face,

And in the new Jerusalem
Appoint my soul a place.

257. Saints in the Hands of Christ. 1 FIRM as the earth the gospel stands, My Lord, my hope, my trust;

If I am found in Jesus' hands,
My soul can ne'er be lost.

2 His honour is engag'd to save
The meanest of his sheep;
And all his heavenly Father gave,
His hands securely keep.

3 Nor death, nor hell, shall e'er remove
His fav'rites from his breast;

In the dear bosom of his love
They must for ever rest.

[blocks in formation]

1 JESUS, the King of glory, reigns
On Zion's heav'nly hill;

Looks like a Lamb that has been slain,
And wears his priesthood still.

2 He ever lives to intercede

Before his Father's face.

Give him, my soul, thy cause to plead,
Nor doubt the Father's grace.

259. A Morning Song,

1 ONCE more, my soul, the rising day Salutes thy waking eyes;

Once more, my voice, the tribute pay
To him that rules the skies.

2 Night unto night his name repeats,
The day renews the sound,

Wide as the heaven on which he sits,
To turn the seasons round.

3 'Tis he supports my mortal frame,
My tongue shall speak his praise;
My sins would rouse his wrath to flame,
And yet his wrath delays.

4 Dear God, let all my hours be thine, Whilst I enjoy the light;..

Then shall my soul in smiles decline,
And bring a pleasant night...

260. Mercy.

1 RAISE your triumphant songs,
To an immortal tune,

Let the wide earth resound the deeds
Celestial grace has done.

2 Sing how eternal love
Its chief beloved chose,
And bid him raise our wretched race
From their abyss of woes.
3 His hand no thunder bears,
Nor terror clothes his brow;
Nor bolts to drive our guilty souls
To fiercer flames below.

4 'Twas mercy fill'd the throne,
And wrath stood silent by,
When Christ was sent with pardons down,
To rebels doom'd to die.
5 Now, sinners, dry your tears,
Let hopeless sorrows cease;
Bow to the sceptre of his love,
And take the offer'd peace.
6 Lord, we obey thy call ;
We lay an humble claim
To the salvation thou hast brought,
And love and praise thy name.

261. God glorified in the Gospel.
1 THE Lord, descending from above,
Invites his children near;

While power, and truth, and boundless love, Display their glories here.

2 Here, in thy gospel's wond'rous frame,
Fresh wisdom we pursue!

A thousand angels learn thy name
Beyond whate'er they knew.

3 Thy name is writ in fairest lives,
Thy wonders here we trace:

Wisdom through all the mystery shines,
And shines in Jesus' face.

4 The law its best obedience owes
To our incarnate God;

And thy revenging Justice shows
Its honour in his blood.

5 But still the lustre of thy grace
Our warmer thoughts employs,
Gilds the whole scene with brighter rays,
And more exalts our joys.

262. The Offices of Christ.

WE

E bless the Prophet of the Lord,
That comes with truth and grace;

Jesus, thy Spirit, and thy word,
Shall lead us in thy ways.

2 We rev'rence our High Priest above,
Who offer'd up his blood,
And lives to carry on his love,
By pleading with our God.
3 We honour our exalted King;
How sweet are his commands,
He guards our souls from hell and sin,
By his almighty hands.

4 Hosanna to his glorious name,
Who saves by diff'rent ways;
His mercies lay a sov'reign claim
To our immortal praise.

263. The Sovreignty of God.
1 THE Lord Jehovah reigns,
His throne is built on high;

The garments he assumes

Are light and majesty ;

"

His glories shine with beams so bright, No mortal eye can bear the sight. 2The thunder of his hand

Keeps the whole world in awe,
