SUNDAY EVENING.

HYMN.

Father! by Thy love and power
Comes again the evening hour;-
Ere our Sabbath labours cease,
Grant us, Lord, Thy heavenly peace!
We to Thee ourselves resign;
May our latest thoughts be Thine!

Saviour! to Thy Father bear
This our feeble evening prayer:
Thou hast seen how oft this day
We like sheep have gone astray;
Let our sins be all forgiven,-
May we rest with Thee in heaven!

Holy Spirit, breath of balm!
Fall on us in evening's calm ;
Lead us on our sins to muse,-

Then the love of God infuse;

Cleanse our thoughts by grace Divine,—
Keep us now, and ever Thine!

LORD of Hosts, who didst once condescend to dwell between the Cherubim, let our prayer come up before Thee as incense, and our supplication this evening be according to Thy Word. Receive us graciously, though we be not cleansed according to the purification of the Sanctuary. Vouchsafe to clothe us with the righteousness of our adorable Redeemer, and to sprinkle both our hearts and our performances with His precious blood, which speaketh better

things than that of Abel. Be gracious to us in this our private audience: may our petitions be received with favour at the throne of grace, and may an answer of peace be sealed in our hearts. O Thou that hearest prayer, unto Thee shall all flesh come. Thou art the Lord by whom we escape death, and enjoy all things pertaining to life and godliness. We thank Thee for all Thy care over us, and for Thy favours towards us, both providential and gracious, this day. Less than the least of all Thy mercies, we are continually blessed with the greatest; and we, who deserve justly to be cast out of the sight of Thine eyes, are yet spared to be the monuments of Thy goodness, and of that love which passeth knowledge. O heavenly Father, impress our hearts with a lively and lasting sense of all Thou hast done for us; and do Thou crown all by working in us that which is well pleasing in Thy sight. Give us unfeigned repentance towards God, and saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Wash us in His atoning blood from all the guilt of our sins, both original and actual clothe us with His righteousness unto justification; and grant us that sanctification of Thy Spirit, without which no man can see the Lord.

We desire to be humbled in Thy awful presence for the sins of this day; for the iniquity.

of our holy things; for our short-comings and our misdoings. Surely all our righteousness is as filthy rags in the eyes of Thine infinite holiness; and our best performances, if brought to the test of Thy holy law, would but add to our condemnation, and increase our punishment. But Thou art a God gracious and merciful, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, through the Ransom Thou hast found, and the Lamb Thou hast provided for a burnt-offering. Enable us to see that our guilt was transferred to Him, that His obedience is imputed to us, and that we are, through grace, interested in all the blessings of the everlasting covenant.

To the care and protection of thy Almighty providence, we would humbly commend ourselves this night. O thou Keeper of Israel, who never slumberest nor sleepest, take charge of us, and watch over us for good. When we sleep, let our hearts wake, and our souls lie open to the influence of Thy blessed Spirit. If we have received any spiritual improvement this day, grant, O Lord, that it may abide with us, and increase with us ever more and more. Let it not be as the morning dew, that quickly passes away; but fasten Thy Word upon our hearts, as a nail in a sure place. Cherish every motion of Thy

good Spirit: begin the work of grace where it is not yet begun, and carry it on with power where it is. May our penitence be deep and lasting; may our faith be strong, lively, and fervent; and may we be built up into lively habitations of Thee, the living God.

In accordance with Thine express command, we implore Thy blessing upon the whole human race. We see, with Thy prophet of old, that darkness still covers the earth, and gross darkness the people; but Thou hast promised that the Lord shall one day rise upon it, and His glory shall be seen among the nations; that the Gentiles shall come to His light, and kings to the brightness of His rising; that the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto God; and that the inhabitants of the isles shall fly as a cloud and as doves to their windows. Hasten, O Lord, this eventful period, and the happy time, when all shall know Thee from the least to the greatest. We would finally commend to Thy goodness and grace the poor and the afflicted, the sick and the dying: be Thou, Lord, their Support, their Consolation, their Physician, and their Eternal Portion. And every day may we all be becoming wiser and better, more useful to live, and more fit to die, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, etc.

MONDAY MORNING.

HYMN.

As every day Thy mercy spares
Will bring its trials and its cares,
Oh, Saviour! till my life shall end,
Be Thou my Counsellor and Friend:
Teach me Thy precepts all divine,
And be Thy great example mine.

When each day's scenes and labours close,
And wearied nature seeks repose,
With pard'ning mercy richly blest,
Keep me, my Saviour, while I rest;
And as each morning sun shall rise,
Oh! lead me onward to the skies.

And at my life's last setting sun,
My conflicts o'er, my labours done,
Jesus, Thy heavenly comfort shed,
To cheer and bless my dying bed:
And from death's gloom my spirit raise,
'To see Thy face, and sing Thy praise.

LORD, Thou God of our salvation, and the hope of all the ends of the earth; upon Thee the eyes of all do wait, for Thou givest unto all life, and breath, and all things. We bless Thee that Thou still watchest over us for good, and
