sensible of what there may be still wanting in us. Show us how much there may be yet to subdue, to bring down, or to cast out. May we know where we stand, that we may be filled with shame at perceiving how little progress we have made, and be excited to greater diligence henceforward.

Guard us, O Almighty Father, from the influence of everything that may bring on any indifference of heart towards Thee. Preserve us from all corrupt principles, which may tend to weaken our faith. Keep us from engaging in any ensnaring employment or speculation. Let us not follow any customs, nor be led into any connections which may deprive us of that simplicity and earnestness with which a Christian should follow his Lord and Saviour.

Blessed be Thy name for all the many mercies and enjoyments of this day. To Thee, gracious Father, we look for preservation this night. May the blood of Jesus Christ cleanse us from all our sins; and may the Spirit of God work in our hearts a true repentance for every unholy thought, word, and action. May all who are dear to us retire to rest with these desires. We commend to Thee, O God, all the children of men, beseeching Thee to supply their several wants, especially their spiritual wants. O that

Thy way may be known upon earth, and Thy saving health among all nations.

Hear us, we beseech Thee, most merciful Lord, in these our imperfect prayers, for the sake of the Great Intercessor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, etc.

LMIGHTY and eternal God, the fountain

of all being, perfection, and blessedness, our goodness cannot extend unto Thee, nor can our praises profit Thee. Yet we bless Thee that Thou hast made us capable of knowing Thee, and hast furnished us with powers which are to be improved by the noble exercises of devotion. We adore Thy wisdom in ordaining that prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, should be the means by which we should obtain blessings from Thee, acccording to our various wants.

Wherewith shall we come before the Lord, or

bow ourselves before the most high God? We cannot present ourselves at Thy throne of grace as innocent creatures, or expect anything from Thee for our own righteousness; for we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. We venture to approach only through a Mediator of Thine own providing,-Jesus Christ the Righteous, whom Thou hearest always, and in whose precious blood is all our trust.

As reasonable and immortal beings, we need and would desire Thee, O God, above all things, for our portion and happiness. From the objects of time and sense, our desires cannot be fully satisfied; nothing short of Thyself can answer our expectations, and fill us with lasting peace. Destitute of Thy favour, in the fulness of all mortal sufficiency we shall be in straits in this world, and our prospects terrible in the next. But if Thou art our God and Portion, in every state here we may learn to be content, and may look forward to the realities of eternity with joy and triumph.

We confess, O God, that we are unworthy of Thy favour, because we have sinned against Thee. We have forfeited Thy favour, and deserved Thy sore displeasure. But we are permitted, nay, encouraged to hope for free forgiveness. For Christ's sake we beseech Thee to

blot out all our iniquities, and let the power of sin be destroyed within us.

Being reconciled unto Thee through Jesus Christ, we desire to continue in Thy favour, and to walk worthy of the vocation with which we are called. May we always endeavour to do those things which are well-pleasing in Thy sight. May we ever take good heed to ourselves, that we be not entangled in sin, and overcome by it. May Thy good Spirit help our infirmities. Strengthen us, O God, by Thy grace, to persevere in the practice of our best resolutions, especially when assaulted by the sins which do most easily beset us. Grant us an increasing faith in the unseen world, to counteract the smiles and the frowns of the present.

We pray for a more steady hope, a more confirmed patience, a more ardent zeal, in order to our continued progress in holiness, until we shall have been made meet for the heavenly inheritance. O do Thou establish, strengthen, and settle us; fill us with all joy and peace in believing and grant that by a patient continuance in well-doing and in suffering, according to Thine appointment, we may seek, and at length obtain, glory and immortality.

We adore and bless Thee, O heavenly Father,
