for all our children, relatives, and friends; for all who are afflicted and distressed, whatever be their trials and sorrows. O our God, do Thou supply all their wants, and fulfil all their desires, as Thy wisdom may deem most expedient for them, according to the riches of Thy mercy in Christ Jesus. Thou, Lord, art the great Preserver of men, who hast kept and blest us all our days. Praised be Thy name for all the goodness which we have so long and so largely experienced. May we be duly sensible of Thy lovingkindness, and thankful for it as we ought to be. Take charge of us, we beseech Thee, and be gracious to us this night. Give us not only bodily rest in our beds, but rest for our souls in Thy blessed Self. And be Thou our Guardian and Guide, our Hope and Help, our Joy and Crown, our All in All, this night and for evermore. Amen.

Our Father, etc.

WEDNESDAY MORNING.

HYMN.

I praised the earth, in beauty seen,
With garlands gay of various green;
I praised the sea, whose ample field
Shone glorious as a silver shield:
And earth and ocean seemed to say,
"Our beauties are but for a day."

I praised the sun, whose chariot rolled
On wheels of amber, and of gold;
I praised the moon, whose softer eye
Gleamed sweetly through the summer sky:
And moon and sun in answer said,
"Our days of light are numbered."

O God! O good beyond compare,—
If thus Thy meaner works are fair,
If thus Thy bounties gild the span
Of sinful earth, and ruined man,—
How glorious must the mansion be

Where Thy redeemed shall dwell with Thee!

THOU God of all grace, who hast promised to help the infirmities of Thy praying people, pour out upon us, we beseech Thee, a spirit of grace and supplication, and teach us how to pray. Open our lips, that our mouths may show forth Thy praise.

As the light of the morning has chased away

the darkness of the night, so may the Sun of Righteousness arise upon our souls, and dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief from our minds. May we, who profess to follow Thee, not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. O Thou, who art the light of the world and the life of men, be Thou our light and our life, that we may be light in Thee, and live by faith upon Thee. While looking to Thee for salvation, in obedience to Thy command, may we have faith to believe Thee and power to obey Thee. While feeling that we have destroyed ourselves through sin, may we rejoice in, and praise Thee for, that precious declaration, that in Thee is our help found. Grant that the belief of this may lead us out of our hopeless helpless selves, and encourage us to come to Thee for all hope and help. When sin invades, temptations beset, evil passions rage, and ungodly tempers rise, and when we are in danger of being overcome by the Wicked One, do Thou stand by to succour and support us, looking unto Thee for victory.

Grant to us, we beseech Thee, of Thy abundant charity, that we may feel a real lively solicitude for the present and future welfare of all our friends, neighbours, and brethren. We would desire to cherish a fellow-feeling of one another's calamities, a readiness to bear one

another's burdens, aptness to forbear, wisdom to advise, counsel to direct, and a spirit of meekness and modesty, sympathizing in their troubles and sorrows, and joyful in their deliverance and security. We pray that all our actions may be characterized by piety and prudence; ourselves wise as serpents and harmless as doves, and our whole lives exemplary, just, and charitable; that, like lamps shining in Thy temple, we may serve Thee and enlighten others, guiding them to Thy sanctuary, and confirming them in Thy faith and fear.

We would farther entreat Thee to plant in our hearts gentleness and patience, a meek and long-suffering spirit, that we may never be transported with violent anger, or harbour desires of revenge. Endow us, we beseech Thee, with such charity, that we may be enabled to return blessing for cursing, good for evil, kind words for foul reproaches. Thus, living all our days with meekness and lovingkindness, keeping peace with all men, and loving our neighbours as ourselves, and Thee, blessed Jesus, more than ourselves, we may at last enter with them into the regions of everlasting love, where Thou livest who lovest all men, and wouldst not that any should perish, but that all men should turn to Thee and be saved.

Teach us, O Lord, to number our days, and ever to remember how short our time is, that we may not dare to sin against Thee. Keep us this day and ever from all accidents and dangers, from the malice and violence of wicked men and devils, from evil company, from all the ways of sinful men, from the hands of all our enemies, from a wicked life, and from despair in the hour of death. Shine gloriously upon us, thou merciful Redeemer; let the light of Thy countenance sustain us in all our agonies, weaknesses, and temptations, that, with the testimony of a good conscience, and the sense of Thy lovingkindness, we may depart this life in the unity of the Church, in the love of God, and a certain hope of salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, etc.
