5 Raife your devotion, mortal tongues,
To reach that bleft abode;

Let heaven and earth with praise resound
To the immortal God.

Hymn CVI.

Altered from WATTS.

Common Metre. [*]

Prefervation at Sea and is foreign Countries.
OW are thy fervants bleft, O Lord,

H How fure is their defence!

Eternal Wisdom is our guide,
Our help Omnipotence.

2 In foreign realms and lands remote,
Supported by thy care;

Through burning climes we pafs unhurt,
And breathe infected air.

3 Thy mercy fweetens every foil;
Makes every region please;
The hoary frozen hills it warms,
And fmooths the boisterous feas.
4 Think, O my foul, devoutly think,
How with affrighted eyes,

5

Thou faw'ft the wide extended deep,
In all its horrors rife.

Confufion dwelt in every face,

And fear in every heart;

When waves on waves, and gulphs in gulphs

O'ercame the pilot's art.

6 Yet then, from all my griefs, O Lord,
Thy mercy fet me free;

Whilft, in the confidence of prayer,
My hope repos'd on thee.

The ftorm was laid, the winds retir'd,
Obedient to thy will;

The fea that roar'd at thy command,
At thy command was ftill.

In midft of dangers and of death,
Thy goodnefs I'll adore;

I'll praife thee for thy mercies paft,
And humbly hope for more.

Bleffings of the Gospel.

H

WOW beauteous are their feet,
Who ftand on Zion's hill;
Who bring falvation on their tongues,
And words of peace reveal!

2 How charming is their voice!
How glad the tidings are!
Zion behold thy Saviour king,
He reigns and triumphs here!
3 How happy are our ears,
That hear this joyful found,
Which kings and prophets waited for,
And fought, but never found!
4 How bleffed are our eyes,
That fee this heavenly light!
Prophets and kings defir'd it long,
But dy'd without the fight.
5 The watchmen join their voice,
And tuneful notes employ;
Jerufalem breaks forth in fongs,
And defarts learn the joy.

6 The Lord makes bare his arm,
Through all the earth abroad;
nation now behold

Let every

Their Saviour and their God.

Hymn CVIII. Short Metre. or b]

Fatherly Difcipline received with Meekness.
OW gracious and how wife

HOW

Is our chaftifing God!

How rich the bloffoms and the fruit

Of his correcting rod.

2 He takes it in his hand, With pity in his heart;

3

That every stroke his children feet
May grace and peace impart.
Inftructed thus, we 'bow,
And own thy fov'reign fway;
We turn our erring footsteps back
To thy forfaken way.

4 Thy promis'd love we feek,

And ftrengthen all the bands, Which clofer ftill engage our hearts To honour thy commands.

5 Our Father, we confent

To difcipline divine;

And blefs the pains, which make our fouls

Still more completely thine.

Common Metre. [*]

The Song of Mofes and the Lamb.

OW great thy works, almighty God! Who fhall not fear thy name! How juft and true are all thy ways, Thou Son of God, the Lamb!

2 More haft thou done than Mofes did,
Our prophet, prieft and king;
From fin thou haft redeem'd our fouls,
And from death's poisonous fting.

3 In the Red Sea, by Mofes' hand,
The Egyptian hoft was drown'd;
But, in thy blood, our fouls are cleans'd,
And guilt no more is found.

4 When through the defart Ifrael went,
With manna they were fed;
But thou haft giv'n thy flesh to eat,
And call'd it living bread.

5

Mofes beheld the promis'd land,

Yet never reach'd the place;

But thou fhalt bring thy followers home,
To fee thy Father's face.

6 Thy lofty praife, O King of faints,
Shall every nation fing;

To thee fhall Jew and Gentile race
Their humble offerings bring.
7 No parting wall fhall intervene ;
But, with united foul,

Their voice fhall join in fongs of praife,
Whilft endless ages roll.

The Safety of the Church.

OW honourable is the place
Where we adoring stand!

Zion, the glory of the earth,
And beauty of the land!

2 Bulwarks of mighty grace defend
The city where we dwell;

The walls, of ftrong falvation made,
Defy th' affaults of hell.

3 Lift up the everlafting

tes,

The doors wide open fling;
H

Enter, ye nations, who obey
The ftatutes of our King.

4 Here fhall you tafte unmingled joys,
And live in perfect peace;
You, who have known Jehovah's name,
And tafted of his grace.

5 Truft in the Lord, forever truft,
And banish all your fears ;
Strength in the Lord Jehovah dwells,
Eternal as his years.

Common Metre. [X]

The Blefings of Abrabam.

OW large the promife, how divine,
To Abrah'm and his feed!
"I'll be a God to thee and thine,
Supplying all their need."

2 The words of thy extenfive love
From age to age

endure

;

The Angel of the cov'nant proves
And feals the bleffings fure.

3 Jefus the ancient faith confirms,
To our great fathers given;

He takes young children in his arms,
And calls them leirs of heaven.
4 Our God! How faithful are his ways!
His love endures the fame;
Nor from the promife of his grace,
Blots out the children's name.
