"All thy works shall praise thee."

1 HOLY, holy, holy, Lord

78, D

God of hosts! When heaven and earth, Out of darkness, at thy word,

Issued into glorious birth,

All thy works before thee stood,
And thine eye beheld them good,
While they sang, with one accord,
Holy, holy, holy, Lord!

2 Holy, holy, holy! thee,

One Jehovah evermore, Father, Son, and Spirit, we,

Dust and ashes, would adore: Lightly by the world esteemed, From that world by thee redeemed, Sing we here, with glad accord, Holy, holy, holy, Lord!

3 Holy, holy, holy! All

Heaven's triumphant choir shall sing, When the ransomed nations fall

At the footstool of their king;

Then shall saints and seraphim,
Hearts and voices, swell one hymn,
Round the throne, with full accord,
Holy, holy, holy, Lord!

James Montgomery (1771-1854.)

[blocks in formation]

1 WHAT shall I render to my God
For all his kindness shown?
My feet shall visit thine abode,
My songs address thy throne.

C. M.

2 Among the saints that fill thy house,
My offerings shall be paid;
There shall my zeal perform the vows
My soul in anguish made.

3 How much is mercy thy delight,
Thou ever blessed God!

How dear thy servants in thy sight!
How precious is their blood!

4 Now I am thine, forever thine,
Nor shall my purpose move,

Thy hand hath loosed my bonds of pain
And bound me with thy love.

Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748.)

Nature and Grace.

C. M.

1 FATHER! how wide thy glory shines! How high thy wonders rise!

Known through the earth by thousand signs,
By thousand through the skies.

2 But when we view thy strange design
To save rebellious worms,
Where vengeance and compassion join
In their divinest forms,-

3 Here the whole deity is known;
Nor dares a creature guess
Which of the glories brightest shone,
The justice or the grace.

4 Now the full glories of the Lamb
Adorn the heavenly plains;

Bright seraphs learn Immanuel's name,
And try their choicest strains.

5 Oh! may I bear some humble part,
In that immortal song;

Wonder and joy shall tune my heart,
And love command my tongue.

Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748).

Psalm cxix.

C. M.

1 OH! that the Lord would guide my ways
To keep his statutes still;

Oh! that my God would grant me grace
To know and do his will.

2 Oh! send thy Spirit down, to write
Thy law upon my heart;

Nor let my tongue indulge deceit,
Nor act the liar's part.

3 From vanity turn off my eyes;
Let no corrupt design,
Nor covetous desires arise
Within this soul of mine.

4 Order my footsteps by thy word,
And make my heart sincere;
Let sin have no dominion Lord!
But keep my conscience clear.

5 Make me to walk in thy commands-
'Tis a delightful road;

Nor let my head, nor heart, nor hands,
Offend against my God.

Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748.)

[blocks in formation]

1 THOU art my portion, O my God! Soon as I know thy way,

C. M.

My heart makes haste to obey thy word,
And suffers no delay.

2 I choose the path of heavenly truth,
And glory in my choice;

Not all the riches of the earth
Could make me so rejoice.
3 The testimonies of thy grace
I set before mine eyes;
Thence I derive my daily strength,
And there my comfort lies.

4 Now I am thine,-for ever thine;
Oh! save thy servant, Lord!

Thou art my shield, my hiding-place,
My hope is in thy word.

Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748.)

Psalm cxlviii.

H. M.

1 YE tribes of Adam, join

With heaven, and earth, and seas,

And offer notes divine

To your Creator's praise:

Ye holy throng

Of angels bright,
In worlds of light,
Begin the song.

2 The shining worlds above
In glorious order stand;
Or in swift courses move,
By his supreme command:

He spake the word,
And all their frame
From nothing came,
To praise the Lord!

3 Let all the nations fear
The God that rules above;
He brings his people near,

17

And makes them taste his love:
While earth and sky
Attempt his praise,
His saints shall raise
His honors high.

Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748.)

Pilgrim Song.

1 CHILDREN of the heavenly king,
As ye journey, sweetly sing;
Sing your Saviour's worthy praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.

2 Ye are traveling home to God
In the way the fathers trod;
They are happy now,
and ye
Soon their happiness shall see.

3 Shout, ye little flock, and blest!
Soon you'll enter into rest;

There your seat is now prepared;
There your kingdom and reward.

4 Fear not, brethren; joyful stand
On the borders of your land;
Jesus Christ, your Father's Son,
Bids you undismayed go on.

78.
