"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name. That at the name of JESUS every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."-Phil. ii. 9-11.

Truly Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, one with the Father; the Redeemer of the world. All who believe in him shall be saved. His command to the Jews was, "Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

After his resurrection, when walking with the two disciples to Emmaus, he began "at Moses, and all the prophets, and expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself."+

When he appeared to his eleven disciples, "he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures, and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”+

Blessed Jesus, enlighten the eyes of my understanding, that I may behold thee in all the fulness of thy glory, as "the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."§ May I receive thee, with joyful heart, as my only Saviour; love thee as my Almighty Friend; and obey thee, as my Sovereign

more,

O! give me grace to prize that blessed volume more and which reveals Thee to my soul, as my Atonement, Righteousness, Purifier, and Intercessor. Suffer not the scoffs of the infidel, or the sneers of the worldly, to shake my faith in Thee. Preserve me from the lying suggestions of Satan, and the inward workings of indwelling sin. thy will, I may, when called out of the body, be glorified with thy glory, and be for ever happy in thy love.

"I love the sacred Book of God,

No other can its place supply;
It points me to the saints' abode,

It gives me wings, and bids me fly.

"Sweet Book! in which my eyes discern
The image of my absent Lord;
From thine instructive page I learn,
The joys His presence will afford.

"In thee, I read my title clear,

To mansions that will ne'er decay;
My Lord! oh! when will He appear,
And bear his prisoner far away.

"Then shall I need thy light no more

To show me whom I have believ'd ;
When I have reach'd the heavenly shore,
The Lord Himself will stand reveal'd.

"When 'midst the throng celestial plac'd,
The bright ORIGINAL I see,

From which the sacred page was trac'd,

Sweet book!-I 've no more need of thee.

"But while I'm here, thou shalt supply
His place, and tell me of his love:
I'll read with Faith's discerning eye,
And get a taste of joys above."

LVII.-EXPERIMENTAL RELIGION.

"I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."-2 Tim. i. 12.

To talk about Christian Experience is, by some persons considered little short of enthusiasm. To try to enlist the affections on the side of Christianity is by others deemed extravagance. In their view, the soberminded Christian is one who attends to the duties of his station, is a strict observer of religious ordinances, and distributes of his substance to the poor and needy. To speak to them about the corruption of the heart, the inward conflict, the power of faith, the energy of love, the work of the Spirit, the grace of the Saviour, is like talking about an unknown region.

It was not so with the blessed Paul. He could say, "I know whom I have believed." He was taught of God to know, by sweet experience, the efficacy of Christ's atonement, the sufficiency of his grace, and the prevalency of his intercession. His ardent desire was "to know Christ, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; if by any means he might attain unto the resurrection of the dead."*

St. John also, being taught of God, was well acquainted with spiritual knowledge and religious experience. His first epistle abounds with the most delightful proofs of this. He seems to rise, as he writes, on the wings of an assured faith and hope:"Ye have an unction from the Holy One, and

ye know all things."—ii. 20.

"We know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."-iii. 2.
