When spring unlocks the flowers to paint the laughing

soil

[ocr errors]

When summer suns their radiance fling

When the worn spirit wants repose

When thro' the torn sail the wild tempest is streaming
Where ancient forests widely spread
Where'er I am, whate'er I see

.

Wherefore should man, frail child of clay
While here as wandering sheep we stray
While sounds of war are heard around
While thee I seek, protecting Power
While with ceaseless course, the sun
Whither, midst falling dew

Who dares attempt the Eternal name
Who shall a temple build for him
Who shall behold the King of kings
With cheerful notes let all the earth
With glory clad, with strength arrayed
Within these walls be peace
With reverence let the saints appear
With sacred joy we lift our eyes
With songs and honours sounding loud

Y.

Ye golden lamps of heaven, farewell

INDEX OF ALTERED FIRST LINES.

The object of this Index is to enable a person to find any
remembered Hymn, the usual clue to which has been lost in
the present volume by the absence or alteration of the First
Line.

The Original First Lines are arranged in alphabetical order;
and under each is found its substitute in the present collection.

Afflicted saint! to Christ draw near
Afflicted saint! to God draw near

And are our joys so quickly fled

Oft, when the waves of passion rise

And let our bodies part

And what though now we part

As new-born babes desire the breast
Lord! I address thy heavenly throne

Away with death, away

Hail the heavenly scenes of peace

Behold the morning sun
Behold the lofty sky

Beyond, beyond that boundless sea
O God! beyond that boundless sea

Blessing, honour, thanks and praise
Hark! a voice divides the sky

Christ, from whom all blessings flow

Lord, from whom all blessings flow

Christians! brethren! ere we part

Come, christians! brethren! ere we part

Christ is our corner-stone

Here, gracious God, do thou

Cleft are the rocks, the earth doth quake
Despised is the Man of grief

Come, thou high and mighty Lord
In the midst do thou appear

Come, we that love the Lord

Come, ye that love the Lord

Creator Spirit, by whose aid

Creator Spirit, by whose light

Farewell, thou once a sinner

Farewell, thou once a mortal

Father of eternal grace

Father of eternal love

Father! to thee I lift mine eyes

O wouldst thou, Lord, thy servant guard

Father! to thy sinful child

Lord! forgive me, day by day

For ever with the Lord

In darkness as in light

For ever with the Lord

My Father's house on high

Great God, whose sceptre rules the earth
Fountain of light and living breath

Great God, whose sceptre rules the earth
O thou that sitt'st in heaven, and see'st

Hail to the Lord's annointed

Receive Messiah gladly

Happiness! thou lovely name
Lord! it is not life to live

Hark how all the welkin rings

Hark! the herald angels sing

Help, Lord! the busy foe

The praying spirit breathe

Hosanna to the living Lord

Hosanna, Lord, thine angels cry

How blest am I, most gracious Saviour

What comforts, Lord, to those are given

How lovely are thy dwellings fair

How lovely are thy dwellings, Lord

How shall the young secure their hearts
The heavens, O Lord, thy rule obey

How welcome to the saints, when pressed
How welcome to the soul, when pressed

Incarnate Word, who wont to dwell
Messiah Lord, who wont to dwell

In thy name, O Lord, assembling

In thy courts, O Lord, assembling

I sought thee round about, O thou, my God
O make us apt to seek, and quick to find

[blocks in formation]

Lord! I have inade thy word my choice
The heavens, O Lord, thy rule obey

Lord! I would be a child of thine

Great God! thy peerless excellence

Lord! what a feeble piece

Lord! what a fleeting breath

Monarch of all! with humble fear
To thee, O Lord, with humble fear

My all in all! my faithful friend

O Lord! thou art my rock, my guide

My soul! thy great Creator's praise
Vast are thy works, almighty Lord

No cloud obscures the summer sky

Child of the earth! O lift thy glance
Now I have found the ground wherein
O Lord! thy everlasting grace

Now may fervent prayer arise

Bless, O Lord, the opening year

O blest Religion, heavenly fair

When gloomy thoughts and boding fean

O God of Abraham, by whose hand
O God of ages, by whose hand

O God, thou bottomless abyss

O God, thou fathomless abyss

O Jesu, source of calm repose
Messiah Lord, rejoicing still

O Jesu, who art gone before
Messiah now is gone before

On the dark wave of Galilee

O'er the dark wave of Galilee

O Saviour, whom this holy morn
O God, whose holy child this morn

O thou that dwell'st enthroned on high
Almighty God! in prayer to thee

O thou who camest from above

O thou who deignest from above
