The faithless, it may be thought, means the lost love of Scott's youth, the beautiful wife of his friend, Sir William Forbes. Lady Louisa says that Scott could banish her from his waking thoughts, but not from his dreams. He was wont to dream of her before the arrival of misfortune, or, at least, this was his persuasion.
