It is with no common feelings of gratification that we are enabled to commence the first number of our Magazine with some notice of an Institution, which we sincerely hope will be the nucleus from which may spring many kindred societies, all animated with the same high and refined purpose which has dignified and prospered the career of the Birmingham Athenic Institution, and gained for it the distinguished honour of being presided over by a young Nobleman, whose generous feelings and true English character amply deserve the sincere and hearty applause which everywhere greets Lord JOHN MANNERS. And we earnestly recommend the youth of our own beautiful city to follow the example so worthily set them by the young men of the great capital of the Northern Counties: it only requires a little exertion, and they would soon see their efforts crowned with the completest sucMechanics' Institutes may make pedants, may train up sceptical and unhealthy philosophers, but they are ill calculated to form good citizens, and amiable members of society. Unless amusements, active games, and manly exercises are combined with study and reading— unless the one is made subservient to the other, it is of no avail; you cannot expect people to work for their employers and work for themselves without a moment of relaxation, and it is neither right or necessary that they should do so.
