4 But thanks to that Almighty Friend,
He is the same to-day,

As when he thus refused to send
Those babes unblessed away.

5 And he has made his covenant broad,-
To all who seek his face,
He'll be a Saviour and a God,
And fill them with his grace.

109 The Coming of Christ. WHY did Christ my Lord appear,

7's.

Why to sinners thus draw near?
Why his glories veiling thus?
Was it not in love to us?

O what matchless grace to deign,
Thus to stoop my heart to gain!
Thus to live and love, and die!
Oh! thou blessed Jesus, why?
2 While I sing the Saviour's birth,
(Heaven rejoice, and triumph earth!)
I will love and serve him more,
And his grace to me adore!
Like the shepherds on the plain,
Listen to the heavenly strain;
Glory be to God again,

1

Peace on earth-good-will to men!

[blocks in formation]

HARK, my soul! it is the Lord

7's.

'Tis thy Saviour, hear his word; Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee: "Say, poor sinner, lovest thou me? 2 "I delivered thee when bound, And when wounded healed thy wound; Sought thee wandering, set thee right, Turned thy darkness into light.

4 Mine is an unchanging love,
Higher than the heights above;
Deeper than the depths beneath,
Free and faithful, strong as death.
5 Thou shall see my glory soon,
When the work of grace is done;
Partner of my throne shalt be;
Say, poor sinner, lovest thou me!"
6 Lord, it is my chief complaint,
That my love is weak and faint;
Yet I love thee and adore;

O for grace to love thee more!

111 Christ's Nativity.

C. M.

MORTALS, awake. with angels join,

chant the solemn lay;

Joy, love, and gratitude combine
To hail the auspicious day.
2 Wrapt in the silence of the night,
The world in darkness lay,
When sudden, glorious, heavenly light
Burst in a flood of day.

3 Hark! the cherubic armies shout,
And glory leads the song:

Good will and peace are heard throughout
The harmonious heavenly throng.

4 0 for a glance of heavenly love,
Our hearts and songs to raise!
Sweetly to bear our souls above,
And mingle with their lays.

5 With joy the chorus we'll repeat,
"Glory to God on high;

Good will and peace are now complete,
Jesus was born to die."

6 Hail, Prince of life, for ever hail! Redeemer, Brother, Friend!

Though earth, and time, and life shall fail, Thy praise shall never end.

112 Christian Example of Benevolence. L. M.

ND is the gospel peace and love?

ΑΝ

Such let our conversation be; The serpent blended with the dove, Wisdom and meek simplicity.

2 Whene'er the angry passions rise,

And tempt our thoughts or tongues to strife, On Jesus let us fix our eyes,

Bright pattern of the Christian life.

30 how benevolent and kind!

How mild! how ready to forgive! Be this the temper of our mind, And these the rules by which we live.

Shone through his life divinely bright.

Birth of Christ.

11, 10. BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the

morning,

Dawn on our darkness and lend us thy

aid:

S'ar of the east! the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid 2 fold on his cradle the dew-drops are shin ing,

Low hes his head with the beasts of thi
stall:

Angels, adore him in slumber reclining,
Maker, and Monarch

a

3 Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, Odours of Eden and offerings divine;

Gems of the mountains, and pear! of the

ocean,

Myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?

4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation; Vainly with gold would his favour secure; Richer by far is the heart's adoration;

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. 114 Eternal Life in Christ alone. C. M.

L
ORD! should we leave thy hallowed feet,
To whom could we repair?
Where else such holy comforts meet,
As spring eternal there?

2 Unmingled joys are thine to give,
And undecaying peace;

For thou canst teach us so to live
That life shall never cease.

3 Thou only canst the cheering words
Of endless life supply;

Anointed of the Lord of Lords,
The Son of God Most High!

Christ the Shepherd.

C. M.

SEE the kind Shepherd, Jesus, stands,

With all engaging charms;

Hark, how he calls the tender lambs,
And folds them in his arms.

2 Permit them to approach, he cries,
Nor scorn their humble name;

For 'twas to bless such souls as these
The Lord of angels came.

3 h l lead us to the heavenly streams
Where living waters tlow:
And guide us to the fruitful fields
Where trees of knowledge grow.

4 The feeblest lamb amidst the flock
Shall be its Shepherd's care;
While folded in the Saviour's arms,
We're safe from every snare.

116 Humility and Love of Christ. C.M. WHEN Jesus left his Father's throne,

He chose an humble birth;

And all unhonoured and unknown,
He came to dwell on earth.

2 Like him may we be found below,
In wisdom's path of peace;

Like him in grace and knowledge grow,
As years and strength increase.

3 Sweet were his words, and kind his look,
When mothers round him pressed;
Their infants in his arms he took,
And on his bosom blessed.

4 Safe from the world's alluring charms,
Beneath his watchful eye,

Thus in the circle of his arms
May we for ever lic.

117 "Suffer little Children to come." C. M.

1

YOUNG children once to Jesus came,

His blessing to entreat;

And I may humbly do the same
Before his mercy-seat.
