1 THE wrong that pains my soul below
I dare not throne above;
I know not of His hate,-I know
His goodness and his love.

2 I dimly guess from blessings known
Of greater out of sight,

And, with the chastened Psalmist, own His judgments, too, are right. 3 No offering of my own I have,

Nor works my faith to prove;
I can but give the gifts he gave,
And plead his love for love.
40 brothers! if my faith is vain,
If hopes like these betray,
Pray for me that my feet may gain
The sure and safer way.

5 And thou, O Lord! by whom are seen Thy creatures as they be,

Forgive me if too close I lean
My human heart on thee!

Majesty of God.

STERNKOLD.

1 THE Lord descended from above,
And bowed the heavens most high,
And underneath his feet he cast
The darkness of the sky.

2 On cherubim and seraphim
Full royally he rode,

And on the wings of mighty winds.
Came flying all abroad.

3 He sat serene upon the floods
Their fury to restrain,

And he, as sovereign Lord and King, For evermore shall reign.

"God, with whom is no Variableness." 1 ALL-POWERFUL, self-existing God, Who all creation dost sustain ! Thou wast, and art, and art to come, And everlasting is thy reign!

2 Fixed and eternal as thy days,

Each glorious attribute divine,
Through ages infinite, shall still

With undiminished lustre shine.
3 Fountain of being! Source of good!
Immutable thou dost remain!
Nor can the shadow of a change
Obscure the glories of thy reign.

The Lord is King.

CONDER

1 THE Lord is King! lift up thy voice,
O earth, and all ye heavens rejoice!
From world to world the joy shall ring;
The Lord Omnipotent is King.

2 The Lord is King! O child of dust,
The Judge of all the earth is just,
Holy and true are all his ways;
Let every creature speak his praise.
3 Come, make your wants, your burdens known;
The contrite soul he'll ne'er disown;
And angel bands are waiting there,
His messages of love to bear.

4 Earth may, with all her powers, dissolve, 4 Oh, when his wisdom can mistake,

If such the great Creator's will;

But thou forever art the same,
I AM, is thy memorial still.

His might decay, his love forsake;
Then may
his children cease to sing
The Lord Omnipotent is King.

TATE & BRADY.
Eternity and Sovereignty of God.
WITH glory clad, with strength arrayed,
The Lord, that o'er all nature reigns,
The world's foundations strongly laid,
And the vast fabric still sustains.
How surely stablished is thy throne,
Which shall no change or period see!
For thou, O Lord! and thou alone,
Art God from all eternity.

3 Thy promise, Lord, is ever sure;
And they that in thy house would dwell
That happy station to secure,
Must still in holiness excel.

God is the tower
To which I fly;
His grace is nigh
In every hour.

2 No burning heats by day,
Nor blasts of evening air,
Shall take my health away,
If God be with me there.
Thou art my sun,
And thou ny shade,
To guard any head
By night or noon.

3 Hast thou not given thy word,
To save my soul from death?
And I can trust my Lord
To keep my aortal breath.
I'll go and come,

191

Nor fear to die,

Till from on high Thou call me home.

General Praise.

1 Он, spread the joyful sound!
The Saviour's love proclaim;
And publish all around
Salvation through his name;
Till all the world

Take up the strain,
And send the echo
Back again!

Or on the thirsty mountains pant,
To fertile vales and dewy meads
My weary, wandering steps he leads,
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

3 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord, art with me still.
Thy friendly staff shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade.

MONTGOMERY'S COLL.

Omnipresence of God.

1 ABOVE, below, where'er I gaze,
Thy guiding finger, Lord, I view,
Traced in the midnight planet's blaze,
Or glist'ning in the morning dew:

Whate'er is beautiful or fair Is but thine own reflection there. 2 And when the radiant orb of light

Hath tipped the mountain tops with gold, Smote with the blaze, my weary sight Shrinks from the wonders I behold: That ray of glory, bright and fair, Is but thy living shadow there.

All Things are of God.

MOORE.

1 THOU art, O God, the life and light Of all this wondrous world we see; Its glow by day, its smile by night,

2

Are but reflections caught from thee; Where'er we turn, thy glories shine, And all things fair and bright are thine When day, with farewell beam, delays

Among the opening clouds of even, And we can almost think we gaze

Through golden vistas into heaven, Those hues that mark the sun's decline, So soft, so radiant, Lord, are thine. 3 When night, with wings of starry gloom. O'ershadows all the earth and skies. Like some dark, beauteous bird, whose plume Is sparkling with unnumbered eyes,That sacred gloom, those fires divine, So grand, so countless, Lord, are thine
