Habitual Devotion.

H. M. WILLIAMS.

1 WHILE thee I seek, protecting Power,
Be my vain wishes stilled;
And may this consecrated hour
With better hopes be filled.
Thy love the power of tho't bestowed;
To thee my thoughts would soar;
Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed;
That mercy I adore.

2 In each event of life, how clear
Thy ruling hand I see!

Each blessing to my soul more dear,
Because conferred by thee.

In every joy that crowns my days
In every pain I bear,

My heart shall find delight in praise,
Or seek relief in prayer.

3 When gladness wings my favored hour,
Thy love my thoughts shall fill;
Resigned, when storms of sorrow lower,
My soul shall meet thy will.
My lifted eye, without a tear,
The gathering storm shall see:

My steadfast heart shall know no fear;
That heart shall rest on thee.

1 WHEN all thy mercies, O my God!
My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view, I'm lost,
In wonder, love, and praise.
Ten thousand thousand precious gifte
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,

That tastes those gifts with joy.
2 Through every period of my life,
Thy goodness I'll pursue;
And after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.
Through all eternity, to thee
A joyful song I'll raise;
But oh! eternity's too short
To utter all thy praise!

Beneficence.

[ocr errors]

WHEN morning's first and hallowed ray
Breaks, with its trembling light,
To chase the pearly dews away.
Bright tear-drops of the night-
My heart, O Lord! forgets to rove,
But rises gladly free,
On wings of everlasting love,
And finds its home in thee.

[blocks in formation]

1 LORD, in heaven, thy dwelling-place, Hear the praises of our race, And, while hearing, let thy grace

Dews of sweet forgiveness pour; While we know, benignant King, That the praises which we bring Are a worthless offering

Till thy blessing makes it more.
2 More of truth, and more of might,
More of love, and more of light,
More of reason and of right,

From thy pardoning grace be given!
It can make the humblest song
Sweet, acceptable, and strong,
As the strains the angel throng

Pour around the throne of heaven.

1 WHEN before thy throne we kneel, Filled with awe and holy fear, Teach us, O our God, to feel

All thy sacred presence near.
Check each proud and wandering tho't
When on thy great name we call;
Man is naught is less than naught
Thou, our God, art all in all.

2 Weak, imperfect "eatures, we
In this vale of darkness dwell,
Yet presume to look to thee
'Midst thy light ineffable.

O, receive the praise that dares

Seek thy heaven-exalted throne;

Bless our offerings, hear our prayers, Infinite and Holy One!

[blocks in formation]

Morning or Evening-All from God. 1 FATHER! thy paternal care

Has my guardian been, my guide!
Every hallowed wish and prayer
Has thy hand of love supplied;
Thine is every thought of bliss,
Left by hours and days gone by;
Every hope thy offspring is,

Beaming from futurity.

2 Every sun of splendid ray;

Every moon that shines serene; Every morn that welcomes day; Every evening's twilight scene; Every hour which wisdom brings; Every incense at thy shrine; These and all life's holiest things, And its fairest -all are thine.

[ocr errors]

3 And for all, my hymns shall rise Daily to thy gracious throne; Thither let my asking eyes

Turn unwearied, righteous One! Through life's strange vicissitude There reposing all ny care, Trusting still through ill and good, Fixed and cheered and counselled there

DEVOTION. 79.

Preparation for Worship.

1 LORD, before thy presence come,
Bow we down with holy fear;
Call our erring footsteps home,

Let us feel that thou art near.

2 Wandering tho'ts and languid powers
Come not where devotion kneels;
Let the soul expand her stores,
Glowing with the joy she feels.
3 At the portals of thine house,

We resign our earth-born cares;
Nobler thoughts our souls engross,
Songs of praise and fervent prayers.

Acceptable Offerings.
1 LORD! what offering shall we bring,
At thine altars when we bow?
Hearts, the pure, unsullied spring
Whence the kind affections flow:

2 Soft compassion's feeling soul,

By the melting eye expressed;
Sympathy, at whose control

Sorrow leaves the wounded breast;
8 Willing nands, to lead the blind;
Heal the wounded, feed the poor,
Love, embracing all our kind,
Charity, with liberal store.
Teach us, O thou heavenly King,
Thus to show our grateful mind,
Thus the accepted offering bring,
Love to thee and all mankind

Adoration and Praise.

1 HOLY, holy, holy Lord!
Be thy glorious name adored.
Lord, thy mercies never fail :
Hail, celestial Goodness, hail!

2 Though unworthy, Lord, thine ear,
Deign our humble songs to hear;
Purer praise we hope to bring
When around thy throne we sing.
3 While on earth ordained to stay,
Guide our footsteps in thy way;
Then on high we'll joyful raise
Songs of everlasting praise.
4 There no tongue shall silent be;
All shall join in harmony,

That through heaven's capacious round
Praise to thee may ever sound.
5 Lord, thy mercies never fail;
Hail, celestial Goodness, hail!
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
Be thy glorious name adored.

A Blessing desired.

KELLY

1 FATHER, bless thy word to all;
Quick and powerful let it prove:
Oh, may sinners hear thy call!
Let thy people grow in love.

2 Thine own gracious message bless,-
Follow it with power divine;
Give the gospel great success;
Thine the work, the glory thine.

Universal Praise.
1 YE realms below the skies,
Your Maker's praises sing;
Let boundless honors rise

To heaven's eternal King.

O, bless his name whose love extends
Salvation to the world's far ends.

2 "Tis he the mountains crowns
With forests waving wide;
"T is he old ocean bounds,

And heaves her roaring tide;
He swells the tempests on the main,
Or breathes the zephyr o'er the plain.
3 Still let the waters roar

As round the earth they roll:
His praise for evermore

They sound from pole to pole. "T is nature's wild, unconscious song

O'er thousand waves that floats along. 4 His praise, ye worlds on high,

Display with all your spheres,
Amid the darksome sky,

When silent night appears.
O, let his works declare his name
Through all the universal frame!
95

Praise from all Creatures.

WATTS.

1 YE tribes of Adam, join With heaven, and earth, and seas, And offer notes divine

To your Creator's praise:

Te holy throng of angels bright!
In worlds of light, begin the song.

12 Thou sun with dazzling rays!
And moon that rules the night!
Shine to your Maker's praise,

With stars of twinkling light.
His power declare, ye floods on high!
And clouds that fly in empty air!

3 The shining worlds above In glorious order stand, Or in swift courses move,

By his supreme command:

He spake the word, and all their frame From nothing came, to praise the Lord.

4 Let all the nations fear

The God that rules above;

He brings his people near,

And makes them taste his love: While earth and sky attempt his praise, His saints shall raise his honors high.
