Voltaire was the precursor of a new civilization. As much credit must be given him as any man in all history for the permanent establishment of this great American Republic. There is scarcely any successful reform movement, among the many to the credit of the nineteenth cero tury, which was not either originated or pioneered by Voltaire.

Voltaire will always be regarded as the greatest man in literature, of modern times, and perhaps even of all times.
