At her houfe in St. Giles's, Oxford, in her 75th year, the dowager Lady Pethall, She was very exemplary in the discharge of the public duties of religion, humane and charitable in her attentions to the poor, conftant and steady in her friendship, and candid and benevolent to all. For the two laft years of her life the never flept, nor had the leaft inclination to repofe. She was the widow of a clergyman, who once kept a fchool at Highgate or Hampstead, where he published a book on the Common Prayer (a fimile in which book was, that God's eye was like the great candle at the postoffice, it would fearch you through and through): thence he removed to the free fchool at Guildford in Surrey, and continued there fome years. Whilft he was there, the late Lord Bingley procured him, in 1761, the living of Warehorn*, in Kent, from the Lord Chancellor Northington. The fchool having become a finecure, means were found to procure his refig nation, in order to render it of ufe to the town. He refigned the living of Warehorn in 1771, and removed to Oxford, and about this time he changed the name of Perfball, which he had hitherto used, and affumed the name and title of Sir John Pefball, bart. Whilft at Oxford he publifhed"The antient and present State of the City of Oxford; chiefly compiled by A. Wood, with Additions by the Rev. Sir John Pefhall, Bart. 1773, 4to. "The Hiftory of the University of Oxford to the Death of William the Conqueror, 1772," 8vo, by Wood; and the fame history ❝continued to the Demife of Queen Eli zabeth, 1773." 4to; and intended to continue it to the Restoration; and a Parochial History of the County of Oxford.
