This Parish contains 101 Houses; extends on the E. to the fecond Door

isli, dam, This was below Amsterdam, the Corner of a Paffage in the High-Street; on the S. Side, and on the W. of the fame, within two Doors of Swan-Court. On the W. to the Red-Lion Inn.

On the N: including Lincoln College, (except the Common Room, Buttery, and Kitchen,) and including Part of Brazen-Nofe.

On the S. the Tennis-Court in Blue-Boar Lane on the W. Side, and to Swan-Court on the E.

Going forward from All Saints, and taking in thofe Houfes that stand oppofite to the N. Side of the Church-Yard, we find among them to have been fometime an ancient Hall, but by what Name called is not specified.Item, Saith a Rental, 42 Ed. III. belonging fometime to St. John's Hofpital, de Aula retro Ecclam. omnium Storum quam Relor Eccle. tenet. 135. 4 d. &c. From the Houses oppofite to the N. E. Corner of the Church-Yard, where the Back Way to the Phanix Inn is, and to the High-Street, and then to the utmost House of the Limits of this Parish near to a certain broad Entrance, we find anciently to be called the Apothecaria & Spiceria, as I shall in the Market more fully defcribe. Amongft, and behind which Houses, have been fituated several Halls, viz. Burwaldscote-Hall. Item, Saith the aforefaid Rental, for a Tenement in All Saints' Parish, de prima Shopa Subtus Aula Burwaldfcote, 9 s. 6 d. It took it Name from Roger Burwaldfcole, Archdeacon of Wilts; and, as it appears elsewhere, Rector of Tackley, 1245." He, it seems, had a large Meffuage in the Parish of All Saints, which he afterwards gave to St. Fridifwede's Priory.-Then was there another Hall, alte called Broadgate-Hall, belonging fometime to St. John's Hofpital, within a few Years after their Foundation, as appears by an Inquifition, 6 and 7 Ed. I. This had its Entrance at the wide or broad Gate at the utmoft House faving one of the Limits of this Parish from St. Mary's, and almost oppofite to the Swan Inn. Within the faid Gate hath anciently been a large Court, wherein hath been divers Receptacles for Scholars, as alfo a Chapel, with other Edifices adjoining, as the Ruins thereof did fhew two Years ago.The Place, it feems, did not only ferve as an Oratory for Students there, but also, with the Hall of Broadgate, was found to have had therein extraordinary Privileges-For, from divers Scripts that I have feen, we are to understand that it hath been an Afylum or Sanctuary, that is a Place privileged by the Pope or King, for the Safeguard of Men's Lives that are Offenders, founded on the Law of Mercy, and for the great Devotion that the Prince or Pope beareth to the Place.-One J. Harry, a Taylor of Oxon, as I have read, who had stabbed a Man, 1463, fled for fear of lofing his Life for the faid Fact to this Place; whereupon Mr. W. Hill, one of the
