A minifter of the fanctuary [ Or, of holy things], and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. 3. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and facrifices: wherefore it is of neceffity that this man have fomewhat alfo to offer. 4. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been fought for the fecond. 8. For finding fault with them, he faith, Behold, the lays come, (faith the Lord) when I will make a (1) new covenant with the houfe of Ifrael, and with the house of Judah: 9. Not according to the covenant that I made vith their fathers, in the day when I took them by the and to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they ontinued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, aith the Lord. 10. (1) In this and the following Verfes, we have the Subftance of the Covenant laid before us, which is full of Grace and Mercy, and offers ardon and Forgivenefs to all who will be prevail'd with to comply ith those reasonable and necessary Conditions on which it is offered. Thofe rtainly mistake the Nature of this Covenant, who think, that when od fays, he will put his Laws into our Hearts, he requires nothing to done by us; for this at once makes void all the Laws of the Gospel. od has promifed the Affiftance of his holy Spirit, to enable us to perrm our Part of the Gospel Covenant, which he will most undoubtedly ve to all, who.in his Way, apply themfelves to him for it, and concur ith his divine Influences, and are not wanting to themselves. He will > as much for us, as fuch reasonable Creatures as we are can expect; it we cannot reasonably expect that he will, whatever he may do in me extraordinary Cafes, offer violence to our Faculties, and constrain to be Good against our Wills.

Some think that the Senfe of this Paffage is to this effect: That wherethe Jews had many Laws given to them, which, when feparated from e Command of God, had no internal Goodness in them; but now ider the Gospel, the Precepts required, fhould be fuch as were moft aceable to our Keafon and Understanding, fuch as we our felves could fcern their Excellency and Perfection; that God would not onconvince us of our Duty, but powerfully incline our Wills to the actice of it; that it fhould be more eafie, than at any time before, to tain to the Knowledge of the Will of God; for that the Precepts ould be fuch, that every one who would confult the Dictates of his vn Mind and Confcience would approve, being as it were writ n in the Hearts of Men. Such, in fact, are the Precepts of e Gospel.

And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, faying, Know the Lord: for all fhall know me, from the leaft to the greateft. 12. For I will be merciful to their unrighteoufnefs, and their fins, and their iniquities will I remember no more. 13. n In that he faith, A new covenant, he hath made the firft old.
