But the Lord is faithful, who fhall ftablish you, and keep you from evil. we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do, and will do the things which we command you. 5. And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Chrift [Or, patience of Chrift]. 6. Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jefus Chrift, that ye withdraw your felves from every brother that walketh diforderly, and not after the

Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travel night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: 9. Not because we have not power, but to make our felves an enfample unto you to follow us: to. For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither fhould he eat. II. For we hear that there are fome which walk among you diforderly, working not at all, but are bufie-bodies. 12. Now b them that are fach, we command, and exhort by our Lord Jefus Chrift, that with quietnefs they work, and eat their own bread. 13. But ye brethren, be not weary [Or, faint not] in well-doing. 14. And if any man obey not our word by this epiftle, note that man [Or, gnifie that man by an epiftle], and have no company with him, that he may be afhamed. 15. (1) The Genealogies the Apoftle refers to, are not thofe recorded in the holy Scriptures, which are of great Ufe; but thofe kept by private Perfons relating to their own Pedigree, which they valued themfelves very much upon. Dr. Allix thinks that the Law of Mofes engaged the Jews in the Study of their Genealogies, that they might more certainly know that of the Melah. But Chrift being now come, and the Jews and Gentiles being to be incorporated into one Church, all fuch things as ferved to keep up the Diftinction between them, as Gircumcifion, Defcent from Abraham, &c. were to be laid aide. The Study of them was now no more of ufe, and they miniftred to many needless Questions, and put a stop to mutual edifying in Faith and Love.

Knowing this, that the (1) law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawlefs and difobedient, for the ungodly and for finners, for unholy and profane, for mur derers of fathers, and murderers of mothers, for man flayers, 10. For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for men-ftealers, for liars, for perjured perfons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to found doctrine, 11. "(1) The Apostle's Meaning is not, that righteous Men are not bound to practife the Duties of the moral Law, the Sum of which is contained in the ten Commandments; but his Meaning is, that when Men tranfgreffed the natural Law, and did thofe things which their own Confciences accused them for, they being contrary to the Will of God, He in mer cy and love to Mankind inforced the Practice thereof by exprefs and pofitive Laws, which forbid the Commiffion of thofe Sins which wick ed Men were guilty of. Rightecus and good Men perform the Duties the, Law requires from an inward Love to holiness; and they abstain from the Sins oppofed to them, fome of which are here reckoned up by the Apoftle, out of choice, and would continue fo to do, had God never given out any pofitive Law. And now the Law is promulged, it condemns not the Righteous, but the Wicked. He that truly loves God, is under the restraint of an inward Law, which is confiftent with the higheft Liberty, and lays him under an agreeable Restraint to do every thing pleading to God.
