(1) Divine Predeftination is a very comfortable Doctrine; but it is of en mifunderstood. It refpects thofe, and thofe only who believe in Chrift, and feriously apply themfelves to perform the Conditions on which alvation is offered by him, which God is ever ready to assist and enable Il thofe to do, who diligently ufe the Means of Grace, and are not wanting o themselves. On the contrary, thofe, and thofe only, are under a Sen nce of Reprobation, who, living an ungodly Life, will not be prevailed with to comply with the Terms of Salvation. And this Senfe of Predeination I take to be confiftent with the 17th Article of our Church, and greeable to what, not only the holy Scriptures, but the most evident rinciples of natural Religion, deliver concerning the Juftice, Holiness, nd Goodness of God. There is not any thing here, or elsewhere in hoy Scripture, when it is rightly understood, to fupport the Opinion of hofe, who fancy that a fixt, certain, and determinate Number of Men d Women are in fuch a Sente predeftinased to Salvation, that they can

(1) The proper rendring of the Greek here is, Children who would not be perfuaded that is, fuch Perfons as would not fuffer themselves to be prevailed with by fufficient Motives to believe and obey the Gofpel. 0. ver thefe the evil Spirit has great Power.

(2) That by the Sin and Fall of our first Parents, humane Nature is very corrupt; that we all, as foon as we come to Age and Understanding fin against God, by confenting to evil Thoughts, by fpeaking evil and wicked Words, and doing evil Actions: That in order to our becom ing the Children of God, and Heirs of eternal Life, it is necessary that there fhould be a Change wrought in us by the Holy Spirit of God, which the Scriptures exprefs by Repentance; by Converfion; by turning from Sin to God; by being born again; by dying to Sin, and living unto Righteousness; put ting off the old Man, and putting on the new Man: Thefe are Truths which cannot reafonably be denied. But that we are formally guilty of Adam's fin, and on that Account Children of Wrath, does not appear to me from this Text. For no Man is properly guilty of fin, but by his ow Choice, and by the Confint of his own Will. It is indeed here faid, that we are by Nature Children of Wrath; but by Nature is often meant Ca from, or Practice; and that it is to be interpreted fo here, is manifeft from the Expreffions in this Verfe, and the Verfes before it, which denote Perions who by their own actual Sins had made themselves Children of Wrath. Such as were dead in Trefpeffes and Sins; fuch as walked accord ing to the Course of this prefent evil World; fuch as fulfilled the Defr of the Flefh, and of the Mind. I will mention but onfe Place where the Word Nature manifeftly fignifies Cuftem or Practice, I Cor. 11.14 15. Here Nature, that is Cuftum, is faid to teach, that Men are to cut the Hair, but Women are not to cut their Hair.
