After which he says: But becaufe by prevailing Cuftom and contrary Habits, this Principle was very much weakned, and almost extinct in the Gentiles, [See Eph.4 17, to 21.] he exhorts them to be renewed in the Spirit of their Mind, ver. 23. and to put off the old Man, that is, flefhly corrupt Habits, and to put on the new Man, which he tells them, ver. 24 is created in Righteousness and true Holiness. This is alfo called, renewing of the Mind, Rom. 12. 2. ren wing of the inward Man, 2 Cor. 4. 16. which is done by the Affiftance of the Spirit of God, Eph. 3. 16. The Reader may likewife confult Bp. (1) By Joy here, I do not underftand that joy or peace of Confcience which is the Reward of Duty; but a Joy which is it felf a Duty, and a Dury refpecting our Neighbour, because it is placed among thofe Vir tues which refpe&t our Neighbour, as Love, Peace, &c. The Joy therefore here meant, is probably that which a Man takes in the Joy and Hap pinefs of others, that Virtue whereby a Man endeavours to caufe Joy to others, by gratifying and pleafing them in all lawful and reasonable things, for their good, and to their Edification.
