Have e fuffered *fo many [Or, fo great things in vain? if it be yet in vain. 5. He therefore that miniftreth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6. And the Scripture foreseeing that God would juftifie the heathen through faith, preached before the gofpel unto Abraham, faying, In thee fhall all nations be bleffed. 9. So then they which be of faith, are bleffed with faithful Abraham, 10. For as many as are of the works of the law, are under the curfe for it is written, Curfed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. II. (1) It may be of Ufe to take notice here, that fuch Expreffions as thefe, To put on Christ, to be, and abide in Christ, to know the Truth, to be born of God, or of Christ, &c. import the being a true Difciple and Follower of Jefus Christ, or the being a true Chriftian, whofe Mind and Life is reformed according to the Rules and Precepts of the Gospel. (1) By the Elements of this World, is meant the Rites and Ceremonies of the Mofaical Law, which the Apoftie, Gal. 3. 24. calls our Schoolmaster; the Defign of which Law was to inftruct and prepare thofe to whom ic was given, for receiving the higher and more perfect Inftitution and Doctrine of Jefus Chrift. The outward bodily Obfervances, &c. taught by the Ceremonial Law, might be ftyled Elements, or Rudiments, in reference to the heavenly Doctrine delivered to Men by Jefus Chrift and his Apoftles, concerning the future and eternal Rewards of the other State, and the divine and holy Life requifite to prepare all those who would have a reasonable Hope of being made partakers of them.

It was then when all other proper Means to reclaim and reduce Men to Obedience, proved ineffectual. Even Suetonius and Tacitus, both Heathen Hiftorians, affure us, that about the Time of our Lord's Birth, the Appearance of fome great Perfon was generally expected.
