(1) Some have thought, that by the feven Spirits, is meant the Holy Ghoft, thus reprefented in refpect of his feven fold, that is, his manifold Graces communicated to his Church; but a more probable Opinion is that of Mr. Jofeph Mede, (which is likewife confirmed by the References) in his Difcourfe on Zach. 4. 10. who underftands by them the feven prin cipal Angels, or Archangels, who minister before the Throne of God, and are the prime Minifters of his Providence; fome of whofe Names are recorded in the holy Scriptures; as Michael, Jude Ver. 9. and Gabriel, Luk. 1. 19. We may obferve, that St. John does not pray for Grace and Peace to the Angels, but from them. God is the Author and giver; the Angels are the Inftruments, whofe Miniftry God thinks fit to make ufe of; and Jefus Christ is the Mediator, through whom every Bleffing is de rived to us.

(1) I cannot but obferve, that our Saviour does not fay, before Abraham was, I was; but before Abraham was, I AM: which is the proper Name of God; whereby is fignified the eternal Duration and Permanency of his Being: In which Senfe he is faid by the Apostle to the Hebrews, Chap. 13. 8. to be the fame refterday, to Day, and for ever; And fo likewife he defcribes himfelf in St. John's Vifion, I am Alpha and Omega, the Begin ning and the ending, faith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty: And that this is fpoken of the Son, you may fee in the fame Chapter, Ver. 17. where he fays of himself, I am the first and the last: And fo likewife he defcribes himself again, Rev. 22. 13. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last: And that we may not doubt who it is that thus defcribes his own Eternity, he continuing, Rev. 22. 16. ftill to speak in the fame Perfon, fays, I Jefus have fent mine Angel, &c. After this I fhall only observe, that all thefe Expreffions are the common Defcription which the Scripture gives of the Eternity of God, whofe Being is commenfurate to all the feveral refpe&s Duration, paft, prefent, and to come: Befides, that the Attribute of Al mighty is alfo a Part of this Defcription, which is fo peculiar a Property of God, I mean of Him who is God by Nature, that the Scripture never gives it to any other.
