PREFACE. THIS work, which aspires to no further pretensions than those suggested by its title, originated in the following manner: the writer had frequently read through the book of Job, and after each perusal he was more and more struck with its marvellous beauties, and the profundity of its knowledge, and pleased to find that a lengthened residence in India enabled him to recognise many allusions and descriptions in the book previously obscure. With an interest thus awakened, he determined on going systematically through the book, committing to paper his thoughts on what he had read. When difficulties occurred, he availed himself of those critical works within his reach, not omitting the Hebrew, Greek, and Latin Bibles, and then recorded his assisted ideas on the various intricate subjects. These he presents to the reader in the humble hope that they will assist in rendering the book of Job equally attractive to him. |
